FSR 3 is now available in the first game, a second one is supposed to follow soon – and more is already possible via preview drivers.

Frank Azor, in his role as Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions & Marketing at AMD, announced on September 28 the release of AMD”s upscaling technology FSR 3 for today, September 29.

Now the time has really come: The official release for the first two games has been made, but that”s not all: Via preview drivers, FSR3 can be activated in further games on a test basis. However, the latter only applies if you have an RX-7000 GPU. We summarize all important information.

All data around the release of FSR 3

FSR stands for FidelityFX Super Resolution and is the name of the upscaling technology from AMD. The decisive new feature is Fluid Motion Frames, in short FMF At its core, these are additionally calculated intermediate frames that significantly increase the FPS in supported games.

What Nvidia has been able to do with its counterpart DLSS or more precisely with the help of the Frame Generation via AI since the RTX 4000 release at the end of 2022, is now also adopted by AMD, natively at least in two games. On the driver side, even more titles will be added via preview.

The games in question with native support are Forspoken and Immortals of Avenum. According to AMD, the patch for Forspoken can already be installed since 3 p.m., the update for Avenum should follow later today.

(New official performance data has already been published for it). At first glance, the FPS gain is immense, but the FSR mode Performance is also used in each case. This lowers the internal resolution especially strongly, which can lead to a blurrier image.

How good FSR 3 really is in practice will be shown by independent tests in the near future.

Two techniques working together

The potential strength of FSR 3 is the interplay between upscaling and FMF.

Put simply, upscaling works like this: The graphics card internally renders a low-resolution game and then upscales the game to your monitor”s native resolution.

This results in a significant performance increase, as the graphics card can process the game at a lower resolution. But upscaling is nothing new in itself.

The special thing is the interaction with FMF. In simplified terms, FMF creates additional intermediate frames. In contrast to Nvidia”s Frame Generation, AMD”s frame generation feature doesn”t only run on the RTX40 series, but also on AMD cards and older models!

Which graphics cards are compatible with FSR 3?

According to AMD, most modern AMD and Nvidia cards should be able to use the feature. The following models are on the official AMD list:

AMD

  • Radeon RX 5700 and higher supported
  • Radeon RX 6000 series upwards recommended

Nvidia

  • GeForce RTX 20 series and higher is supported
  • GeForce RTX 30 series recommended

Per preview driver goes even further, but with a catch: The driver is only compatible with current RX-7000 cards for now and there are some limitations and notes.

Among other things, it is recommended to activate FSR3 only from at least 55 FPS (Full HD) or 70 FPS (WQHD and higher resolutions).

With the driver you can activate the new HYPR-RX feature in twenty more games. It combines FSR 3 and FMF with other techniques like Radeon AntiLag to reduce input latency. It is also possible to manually enable FMF in games running DirectX 11 and 12:

In addition to these selected titles, FMF can be manually enabled for any title, such as Cyberpunk 2077, using the per-app settings in AMD Software: Adrenaline Edition.

You can find all info about the driver and the download link (directly in the matching AMD post).

The release of FSR 3 comes late, but it has the potential to make AMD more competitive again in the duel with Nvidia. How long have you guys been longing for this feature? How many frames do you think FMF and upscaling will allow in your setup? And do you think AMD will be able to compete with Nvidia in terms of image quality? Feel free to write it in the comments!
