The makers of Kingdom Come: Deliverance are reportedly creating a major Middle-earth RPG. The rumor has been around for a while, now it’s getting a new boost. (This article is not an April Fool’s joke)
From tranquil Bohemia to the epic fantasy universe of Tolkien? The CzechKCD2 developer studio Warhorse has been rumored several times to be working on a game based on The Lord of the Rings. Now there is another insider voice who wants to confirm this.
We sort out what is known so far. And no, this article is not an April Fool’s joke, the date is actually just a coincidence.Rumor: Warhorse is now working on Middle-earth
At the end of 2025, Insider Gaming (who repeatedly publish accurate leaks from the gaming industry and are demonstrably well-connected) reported that abig new Middle-earth gamewas in the works, which would be controlled from a third-person perspective and be reminiscent of Hogwarts Legacy – whatever exactly that means.
The game is to be supported by the United Arab Emirates with 100 million US dollars and will be developed by a studio of the Embracer Group, which holds the rights to Middle-earth. Warhorse is one of the studios under the Embracer umbrella, and they proved that they can create top-class role-playing games with KCD2 at the latest. With a much smaller budget. So it would be more than conceivable.
Ryszard Chojnowski, a Polish industry veteran, has now commented on this, asInsider Gamingreports. He heard this rumor weeks ago and didn’t believe it at first. Now, however, he has heard whispers to this effect from several sources.
However, the whole thing is rather confusing– hardly surprising, as it’s all just rumors. Because othersourcesare also sayingCrystal Dynamics(the makers of the new Tomb Raider games) are working on this Middle-earth game. And, of course, they also fit in perfectly with the alleged third-person view and the action-adventure model of a Hogwarts Legacy.
Does this mean that both studios are working together on the title? Or are two different games with a Lord of the Rings setting being created? Embracer did not want to comment on this to Insider Gaming. According to the publisher, they do not comment on rumors.
What do we know for sure about Warhorse?
What is certain is that the studio is finished with KCD2 and is already working on the next project, which is to be another immersive role-playing game – explicitly not necessarily with a historical setting.
We have compiled all the rumors about a sequel to KCD, Middle-earth or others for you.
The studio is apparently planning two games, as two game directors were recently introduced as successors to Daniel Vávra. This role is not normally filled multiple times per project, especially not at a medium-sized studio like Warhorse.
It is quite possible that one of these games will be a Middle-earth role-playing game. Nothing is officially confirmed though, so treat it for what it is: a rumor. Hopefully we won’t have to wait an eternity before we get some solid information. At least Warhorse has already commented on the development time: according to them, it shouldn’t take another seven years like it did between KCD and KCD2.
