Is there going to be a Fallout: New Vegas 2 after all? According to well-known journalist Jason Schreier, Obsidian is now reportedly working on a new Fallout game.

The Elder Scrolls 6 is still at least two years away, so we probably won’t see Fallout 5 until well past 2030—more than 15 years after the last main installment in the series. Phew, not exactly great news for Fallout fans, but maybe we won’t have to wait that long after all.

Renowned and always well-informed gaming journalist Jason Schreier claims to have learned that the developers ofNew Vegasare now working on a new project: a Fallout game!

Condemned to Fallout

Fans have been worried about Obsidian Entertainment for quite some time: The developer’s last two role-playing games, Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, were far from the major successes Microsoft had hoped for. As part of the major round of layoffs announced by Xbox head Asha Sharma a few days ago, Obsidian was also affected: According to Jason Schreier, the studio is losing a quarter of its developers, and there is reportedly going to be a change in direction.

Several projects, including a sequel to Avowed, have been canceled. InsteadObsidian is now reportedly working on a new game set in the Fallout universe, led by Design Director Josh Sawyer, the lead developer of Fallout: New Vegas. Of course, we don’t yet know exactly what this game will look like.

Is this really happening? It’s safe to assume that Schreier’s information is authentic. However, he himself adds: Thestrategy currently being developed is still in flux. So Obsidian and Xbox’s plans could still change. That said, it would fit well with Asha Sharma’s new strategy; she previously announced that the company intends to focus on major franchises—such as Fallout and The Elder Scrolls—in the future.

So the odds are good that we’ll get a new Fallout after all in the next few years. Obsidian developed New Vegas in a record-breaking 18 months back then, though the game was in a disastrous technical state at launch.

While Microsoft likely wants to release a new Fallout as soon as possible, it will probably take a little longer. Additionally, Obsidian is currently in the midst of a restructuring. The loss of a quarter of its staff will certainly have an impact on the development process.

So things aren’t looking so bad after all for Fallout fans. In addition to a new game, the third season of the series is already in the works—and there’s even a first image of the ghoul to mark the start of filming—read more about that in the box. On the other hand, there’s also some bad news. The wave of layoffs at Xbox has also affected Fallout developer Bethesda. You can find the most important details in the box as well.
