From a German studio, an action role-playing game will be released before the end of 2023, in which you explore and build a classic fantasy world alone or with friends.

2021 the Viking survival game Valheim became a surprise hit, now the German studio Keen Games announces Enshrouded, a title that fans of Valheim should keep an eye on. Again, you”ll be heading into an open fantasy world that you can explore alone or with friends.

Keen Games is based in Frankfurt am Main and focuses primarily on unusual role-playing games in its development. Most recently, the studio celebrated great success with the multiplayer role-playing game Portal Knights, which received an award for best German game of the year at the German Computer Game Awards 2017, among others. However, it did less well in our test.

According to Creative Director Antony Christoulakis, Enchrouded is now set to become the game that Keen Games has been dreaming of for years. The game was revealed directly with a gameplay trailer:

This is what Enshrouded is all about

Players in Enshrouded awaken in a magical world called Embervale and are called Flameborn. They are warriors from the past who were put into a deep sleep in temples. In the meantime, the world fared rather poorly. The world was hit by a plague that corrupted all magic.

Consequently, the entire open game world is now teeming with gloomy mists and insane monsters. The reawakened Flameborn must now push back the fog and in return explore the world, farm and improve their own skills.

In gameplay terms, you can expect the following features:

  • Roleplay: You create your own character and craft your own armor or weapons thanks to the extensive crafting system. With the help of a talent tree you can further develop your character.
  • Coop: Up to 16 players can dive into the vast world of Embervale at the same time and build a base together or support each other in battles.
  • Cities and castles: Enshrouded is also about fighting for survival. To do this, you”ll gather supplies and build your own base. Judging by the images from the trailer, you can even create medieval cities or castles. You can also find NPCs and recruit them as craftsmen.
  • Boss Battles: In order to push back the fog, the Flameborn will have to defeat rather quick-witted bosses that act as leaders of various factions.

Enshrouded is scheduled to enter Early Access on Steam later this year, and the developers currently expect a full-fledged release a year later. Until then, new features are to be introduced and the open world is also to be expanded.
