What happens after Destiny 2?
We’ve translated Bungie’s official statement for you:
For nearly twelve years, we’ve had the immense pleasure and honor of exploring the Destiny universe alongside you. Through all the ups and downs, surprises, and successes, it has been an incredible privilege to shape Destiny together with our players. Even though our love for Destiny 2 remains as strong as ever, we realized that after The Final Shape, the time has come to let our shared worlds and Destiny live on beyond Destiny 2.
As our focus now turns to a fresh start for Bungie, we will begin developing our next games. To that end, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 on June 9, 2026, to begin this new journey as a studio.
While active development is now coming to an end, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update are aimed at ensuring that Destiny 2 remains a welcoming place for players to return to.
We are proud of Destiny 2, the places it has taken us, and the legacy it has created. Thanks to all of you, our universe is vast and built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we’ve forged lifelong memories and friendships with all of you.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has joined us on this journey.
Is Destiny 3 in the works?Exactly what this fresh start at Bungie means remains very vague. However, well-known industry insider Jason Schreier paints a rather bleak picture of the future. According to him, Bungie is now planning major layoffs among former Destiny 2 developers. Some of them are reportedly working on new ideas, including specific ones for Destiny. None of these have received the green light yet. A Destiny 3 is therefore currently up in the air.
Does this come as a surprise to you? Will you switch to Marathon after Destiny 2, or will you stay loyal to the old sci-fi shooter, even if no new seasons or other content are released? Feel free to let us know in the comments. We’ll, of course, keep our eyes open to see if the rumors mentioned by Jason Schreier are confirmed.
