The Royal Court DLC makes Crusader Kings 3 almost an RPG. The developers explain how artefacts and the new inventory work.

2022 there will finally be supplies for fans of the global strategy game Crusader Kings 3. Originally, the Royal Court DLC was supposed to be released already this year, but the developers have decided to postpone the new content in favour of a higher quality.

At least there is regular fresh information for the waiting fans in the form of various developer diaries that revolve around the new features. The latest issue deals with the artefacts already known from the second part of the series and the new inventory. Combined, this brings a strong breeze of role-playing across the world map.

How the inventory works

The important news at the beginning: Even if you don’t buy the DLC, you still benefit from the artefacts and therefore also have access to the inventory. The difference: Only Royal Court purchasers can also use and display artefacts in the eponymous royal court. Normal characters, however, can be equipped with the new bonus items by anyone.

This is where the new inventory comes into play. It looks the same as in role-playing games: you can place the artefacts in different slots, depending on the type of item. In the right part of the window you can easily switch between the individual categories.

The new inventory could almost come from a role-playing game and has some comfort functions.

The equipable artefacts are divided into the following categories: Crowns, Insignia, Weapons, Armour and Trumpery. Behind the latter are all kinds of, well, odds and ends. A tool symbol next to each entry offers the possibility to repair the artefact. After all, all the items you give your characters will wear out over time.

Another window presented in the developer diary is the detail view. There you can find out more about the history of the artefact, including details of who has laid claim to this unique item. If you are unlucky, the precious piece can also be brazenly stolen from you.

But of course you can also turn the tables: If your idiot cousin inherits a valuable ring that you desperately want, you don’t have to strangle him in the middle of the forest like some other contemporaries, but you can still win him over: In a duel, in war or by theft.

If you want an artefact yourself, you must steal it from the owner.

Made or inspired, what will it be?

You can not only repair artefacts, but also improve them or make them yourself. If you’re in the mood for a brand new one, simply commission one. The advantage of this is that you can choose exactly what kind of artefact you want.

Alternatively, you can get artefacts from personalities who have the power of inspiration. However, this can take many months and you have no idea what you will receive in the end. Now you might ask yourself why the hell you should choose this path at all.

The answer: while the craftsmen you hire only ever do the bare minimum and consequently cobble together poor artefacts, the inspired people produce much higher quality creations.
