The AI assistant provides tips and tricks live in the game. But many don’t want that at all.

At the Game Developers Conference at the beginning of March, Microsoft announced that the “Gaming Copilot” AI assistant would be coming to Xbox consoles this year. The reactions of many gamers and developers are clear.

AI guides live in-game

What is the Gaming Copilot?AI featurehas been available on PC, mobile devices and the ROG Xbox Ally in a beta version since last year. Basically, it is an assistant that can be approached directly in the game at any time and asked for advice.

For example, you can ask for tips on an upcoming boss fight or specific crafting recipes without having to leave the game first. On the console, it should also be possible to ask for suggestions based on your own game history.

Although the function has attracted comparatively little attention so far, this could change in 2026. As reported byGamesRadaramong others, Microsoft revealed on a panel at GDC that Gaming Copilot will also be coming to the current console generation in 2026.

On Reddit, this announcement is being discussed intensively in a correspondingpost. The reactions are predominantly negative. You can find the whole post here:

What is being criticized? As is so often the case, the feature is perceived as an AI function that nobody actually asked for and that doesn’t really make the products or games any better.

While previously you could fall back on extensive guides and wikis created by real people if you had questions about a game, with Gaming Copilot you get “fake Reddit comments” as solutions.

Many users state that they never want to use the feature, and one also asks directly whether it will be possible to switch it off. Although there is no official information on this, it is highly likely that this will be possible.

What Microsoft does not reveal is where the Gaming Copilot actually got the information from. Ultimately, the AI is also likely to access guides and wikis from the internet without their explicit consent.

On TikTok, the former Valve and Left4Dead developer “chetfaliszek” has also commented on Gaming Copilot:

He is responding to a demo clip from Microsoft in which the first steps in the pirate game Sea of Thieves are explained by Gaming Copilot. The developer asks why you should even build worlds that invite players to explore if every step is explained directly.

Imagine playing titles like Elden Ring, The Witcher 3 or Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the first time. And instead of exploring these worlds and their secrets on your own, an AI voice explains to you throughout what you should do next to reach the end as quickly as possible.

The advantage of “real” guides is that there are real people behind them who pass on their expertise and experience.

For example, TV expert Maxe will tell you what to do if your TV picture is too dark, andNele will explain how to optimize the battery life of your gaming headset.

It remains to be seen exactly when Gaming Copilot will come to the Xbox and what the integration of the feature will look like in practice. Whether it will be a great success is at least questionable based on the initial reactions from the community. However, this does not necessarily mean anything for the use of gamers in the long term.
