Gearbox has unveiled the roadmap for Borderlands 4, and the first new content will be available soon.
About a month after the release of Borderlands 4, Gearbox Software and 2K have announced their roadmap for the coming months. You can look forward to a mix of paid story expansions and free content to expand the endgame later this year.
It all kicks off with a seasonal event in October 2025, followed by a first, smaller story DLC in November and a major, free endgame update in December.
What the post-launch roadmap for 2025 has in store
At PAX Australia, Gearbox presented a detailed roadmap for the period after the release of Borderlands 4, which extends into the first quarter of 2026:
Plans include free updates for all players as well as paid DLCs in two different sizes: “Bounty Packs” and “Story Packs.”
The first paid add-on will be released on November 20, 2025. “Bounty Pack 1: How Rush Saved Mercenary Day” will include a new, self-contained mission series, a new boss battle, and a load of new legendary equipment and themed cosmetic items.
These smaller packs are reminiscent of the Headhunter Packs from Borderlands 2 and are intended to bridge the gap until the larger expansions are released.
Free endgame update in December
A highlight for everyone is likely to be the free update announced for December 2025: This will provide the first major challenge for high-level chamber hunters: a new raid boss. The first “Invincible” opponent is called “Bloomreaper the Invincible” and is reminiscent of classic raid bosses such as Crawmerax from the first Borderlands.
In addition to the raid boss, the December update will introduce a new difficulty level for “Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode.”
Even before this content is released, the first free, limited-time seasonal event will begin. The “Horrors of Kairos” event will run from October 23 to November 6, 2025, and will introduce a new weather effect – blood-red rain – as well as new legendary rewards that you can loot from a world boss.
Outlook for 2026
The roadmap also provides a first glimpse of what to expect in 2026. In the first quarter, you can look forward to the first major “Story Pack,” “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned.”
This major expansion will not only feature a new cosmic horror-style story campaign starring the popular mechanic Ellie, but will also introduce the first new playable Vault Hunter: C4SH, a robot cowboy who relies on gambling mechanics such as cards and dice in combat.
In addition to the new character, the Story Pack will also bring new areas, missions, equipment, and numerous cosmetic customizations.
