New details on how unlocks and cosmetic content will work were also revealed as part of the beta announcement.

The wait is over, finally there is new info on Battlefield 2042! In addition to the beta launch date and a brand new gameplay trailer, the developers are now also sharing details about the progression system for the first time. We summarise what is known about XP, weapon unlocks, Mastery and the return of the Ribbons!

 XP system in Battlefield 2042

The developers promise that players who stay with their squad and focus on mission objectives will receive the most experience points – so teamwork and PTFO are the order of the day! Secondarily, XP is awarded for kills, assists and other actions. The maximum level is 99, after which you can level up further from S001 to S999 via a prestige system called S-Level.

In addition, the popular ribbons from the older BF games return – these are smaller badges in three levels that are awarded for certain achievements. At the end of each round, experience points are paid out for them. The following ribbons have been revealed:

  • Objective Ribbon: Play the mission objective
  • Wingman Ribbon: Support your team with Revives
  • Logistics Ribbon: Heal and care for teammates, repair vehicles
  • Intel Ribbon: Mark enemies or destroy generic drones
  • Combat Ribbon: Score kills or destroy enemy vehicles

Weapon Unlocks & Skins

With each level, players unlock new weapons, gadgets or cosmetic content. Vehicles and weapons in turn have their own progression system: if you make enough kills with the M5A3 assault rifle, you unlock new sights for it and so on. The mastery system also gradually unlocks new skins for the weapons and other cosmetic upgrades. Skins come in the following levels of rarity:

  • Common (grey)
  • Rare (blue)
  • Epic (purple)
  • Legendary (gold)

Rare and Epic skins for Specialists contain a body and a head component, so you can freely mix different helmets, caps, etc. with body skins. Legendary skins, on the other hand, are complete outfits and cannot be combined. If you want to get an idea of the arsenal, you can find a list of all confirmed weapons in Battlefield 2042 here. In our gallery you can now find the first examples of specialist, weapon and vehicle skins in Battlefield 2042:

Player Card: The player business card

A new feature is called the Player Card, a customisable badge designed to represent the player and their achievements. “You can use it to express your identity in the game and show off Achievements,” say the developers.

The Player Card consists of:

  • Player Level or S-Level
  • Player Icon and Title
  • Platform Icon (PC, PS5, etc.)
  • Card Art (central motif)
  • Badge (for specific merits)

The Player Card is displayed in the Killcam and at the end of the round. However, it has no effect on the course of the game. By the way, in our overview you can now find out more about the start times and system requirements of the BF2042 beta!
