Game manufacturer Wizkids has released small figures based on the main characters from BG3. However, they quickly caused outrage and ridicule among fans.
“A gallery of disappointment”: That’s how our colleagues at Gamerant describe the new collectible figure pack for Baldur’s Gate 3 in their review. Harsh words, but in this case also very accurate – because the painting of the miniatures is truly awful.
Many fans expressed their disappointment on social media. The posts give you a pretty good impression of the extent of the artistic disaster, such as this one from Larian’s Senior Cinematic Artist:
What I ordered VS what I received. Only Gale has a decent face. It’s expensive for a 5-year-old painting… Shame on you @Wizards_DnD pic.twitter.com/JcMCBhtRpt

Particularly annoying: the figures looked much nicer in the advertisement. For many, this borders on consumer deception, and apparently the manufacturer WizKids also takes a critical view of the whole thing.
Refunds and an apology
This was official merchandise produced in collaboration with publisher Wizards of the Coast, so buyers’ expectations were (rightly) high.
WizKids has now issued a statement on its websiteapologizing for the mistake:
WizKids is committed to creating products that enhance and increase the enjoyment of gaming. We want our customers to create long-lasting, fond memories of game nights with friends and family using our products. Unfortunately, we did not achieve this goal with the D&D Icons of the Realms: Baldur’s Gate 3 Character Box. (…)
We are aware of the recent reports and complaints and take them seriously. Our team is currently investigating these issues and taking steps to help those whose purchases have been negatively impacted and to ensure that these issues do not occur in future products and reprints.
We sincerely apologize for the frustration and disappointment these quality issues have caused our customers. We feel the same way, as the final product did not meet our expectations or those of our partners at Wizards of the Coast. Our teams are working to find the best solutions for everyone involved and are working with our customers to resolve this issue. We appreciate your patience as we focus on contacting those affected and helping them with refunds.
Refunds will be available to anyone who is not satisfied with the box, and returns should be easy at all points of sale. Alternatively, you can request a new box – so it seems that production of the set will continue. Why the poor quality? WizKids has not provided an official explanation. Presumably, the painting was outsourced to another company to save costs. Without further information, it is of course impossible to say what the working conditions are like there and how much time employees are given to paint a figure.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has never really gone away since its release in 2023, but Larian’s role-playing game has recently received another boost: Patch 8 added the last remaining features. Now the development studio is turning its attention to its next projects. The rights to the characters from the game remain with Hasbro.
