After a long silence, Ubisoft has finally announced the name of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed spin-off – and it couldn’t be more fitting

It has been known for some time that Ubisoft is finally producing an Assassin’s Creed with a Japanese setting after years of fan demands  Some details have also been leaked in recent months about the era and the possible main characters of this title, which has been codenamed Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red

However, the French publisher has so far remained silent about further details or even images of the AC spin-off announced for this year.

Those who walk in the shadows

Now the wait is officially over for Japan fans: Today, Ubisoft broke its silence and finally revealed the name of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed – and it couldn’t be more fitting

Because the Japan spin-off is now called Assassin’s Creed Shadows

As we already know, at least one of the two main characters is supposed to be a shinobi or ninja. And these medieval assassins are known to move in the shadows. Equipped with an arsenal of throwing stars, katana and, of course, the hidden blade, one of the most exciting Assassin’s Creed settings ever could be waiting for us here.

As Ubisoft announced in a short teaser video on Twitter/X  the game will be officially unveiled next Wednesday evening with a big reveal trailer There is also already a logo. It features a red Assassin’s Creed character that looks like it was drawn with a calligraphy brush

We have linked the post below; perhaps a few AC fans will discover even more hidden information in the teaser.

A short video has also appeared on the Ubisoft website, which probably shows a tiny excerpt from the upcoming trailer. It shows a typical Japanese mountain landscape, a river with rice fields and thatched houses. One user immediately posted the whole thing on Twitter:

What is known so far?

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will probably be set in Japan during the Sengoku period in the late 16th century During this time, the country is fragmented into many small principalities. The imperial court in Kyoto has lost its authority and the regional princes are fighting each other for power and influence

During this time, Oda Nobunaga, the Lord of Owari, comes up with the idea of reuniting the country under a strong central authority and, with the help of Western firearms, launches a campaign that lays the foundation for modern Japan. One of the main characters of AC Shadows is said to be a samurai named Yasuke from Nobunaga’s entourage.

The second protagonist, Naoe, is the aforementioned shinobi lady. Due to this mix between samurai and ninja, we can probably expect both powerful sword fights and covert assassination missions.

An official release date for Assassin’s Creed Shadows has not yet been announced. However, it can be assumed that the game will be released in time for the 2024 Christmas season, almost certainly in November.

This is supported by the fact that the previous Assassin’s Creed games were mostly released during this period. As far as platforms are concerned, we can expect Assassin’s Creed: Shadows to be released for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
