According to a rumor, Sony is once again increasing the prices of several PS5 models.
Update from March 27: We have expanded the article to include the official information from Sony.
Prices for RAM and storage have been rising for months. In 2026, the crisis will also spread to other sectors. What was still a rumor this morning has now been officially confirmed by Sony: They are drastically increasing the prices of the PS5 models.
PS5 prices set to rise further
In the past, prices for new consoles have usually fallen gradually over the course of the product cycle. Only when they become retro treasures do they possibly become more expensive again many years later. The current generation is a different story.
In 2020, the PS5 was launched with RRP’s of 400 euros for the Digital Edition and 500 euros for the Disc Edition. In 2023, the prices then rose to 450 euros and 550 euros respectively. The price of the Digital Edition was then revised upwards again to €500 in 2025.
Now Sony is announcing a further price increase:
- PS5 Digital Edition: Previously 500 euros, now600 euros.
- PS5 Disc Edition: Previously 550 euros, now650 euros.
- PS5 Pro: Previously 800 euros, now900 euros.
- PS Portal: Previously 220 euros, now250 euros.
This is how the community reacts
“If the prices keep going up, I can sell my PS5 for more than I paid for it at launch. I never thought it would increase in value like this.”
The frustration of many users is also once again directed at AI and the companies behind it. One user writes sarcastically:
“This is brought to you by AI slop and deepfake porn.”
Many gamers are also concerned about what this could mean for the next generation. If the PS5 already costs 650 euros, a possible PS6 will hardly be any cheaper. If it doesn’t come onto the market in four to five years anyway.
