According to a leak, AMD is preparing to launch the Ryzen 7 7700X3D. This is likely a downclocked version of the former king of gaming CPUs.

AMD is reportedly preparing a new processor again—and this time, it’s not about the current Ryzen 9000 generation.

Instead, it’s about a potential Ryzen 7 7700X3D, which, according to leaker “chi11eddog,” is on its way and is expected to slot in just below the still-popular 7800X3D.

Ryzen 7 7700X3D: Lower clock speed – and a lower price?

According to the leak, the rumored Ryzen 7 7700X3D is said to be nearly identical in all specifications to the aforementioned Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

  • This would also feature eight cores, equipped with 96 MB of L3 cache—64 MB of which is 3D V-Cache. The TDP is expected to be 120 watts, typical for this class.
  • The only difference, therefore, is the clock speed: The base clock drops from 4.2 GHz to a flat 4 GHz; in Boost mode, it is expected to reach 4.5 GHz instead of the maximum 5 GHz on the 7700X3D.
  • Given its designation as a 7000-series CPU, it is likely to feature the AM5 socket, which AMD intends to support for several more years anyway.

The leak does not indicate whether this Ryzen 7 7700X3D will be available directly to consumers or if it is merely an OEM variant. The price AMD intends to set for this CPU is also unclear.

At least in gaming, such a CPU (at a reasonable MSRP) could make sense:Thanks to its 3D V-Cache, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D outperforms even current Zen models like the Ryzen 7 9700X in gaming benchmarks.

However, for a Ryzen 7 7700X3D to become an attractive alternative in terms of price, it would inevitably have to undercut the current prices of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

At the time of this article’s publication, that price stands at 333 euros—but it remains to be seen whether AMD will offer the CPU for 300 euros (or even less).
