In a large sandbox you have to fight as a research team against zombies and many other creatures. Initial user reviews are enthusiastic

Welcome to the GATE research facility! In Abiotic Factor, you slip into the skin of a scientist who is working on projects at the secret base that are certainly not talked about at the dinner table at home.

One day, a catastrophe occurs. Due to a breach of security, the site is suddenly infested with numerous monsters and other anomalies. And then there’s the military, who suddenly jump into the fray too.

Sounds a lot like Half-Life 1 to you? Yes, Abiotic Factor is clearly inspired by Valve’s cult shooter. The title mixes the setting with plenty of survival gameplay and the result is a game that is already causing a stir on Steam.

How to play Abiotic Factor

Your primary goal as a survivor is, of course, not to bite the dust. To extend your life expectancy, you can build a base in the extensive research facility. What do you need for this? That’s right, lots of resources!

You can collect these on your forays through the abandoned offices and laboratories. You can play Abiotic Factor not only in co-op, but also on your own

Thanks to a variety of positive and negative characteristics, including different skills and perks , you can specialize more and more over the course of the game, which should also increase the replay value. Will you become a master in dealing with genetically modified plants or rather an excellent cook who can also dish out a good shotgun blast?

The rest is survival 101: you collect, build, unlock new equipment, can advance deeper into the base and then the cycle starts all over again.

What Steam users are saying

Abiotic Factor only entered Early Access on May 2, 2024, but according to SteamDB more than 16,000 players have already played it at its peak. That’s a considerable success for a small indie game.

Of the more than 2,500 user reviews , 97 percent are positive. In addition to the omnipresent inspiration of the first Half-Life, the fun base building and the dense atmosphere are praised above all.

The user Vidyabum writes in his review:

I love this game so far. It’s like rediscovering an old favorite game with my friends, but it’s … not old. […] It’s a survival crafting game with a familiar twist and a nice dose of horror-survival to it. I think this game will be fantastic in solo mode too. You owe it to yourself to give it a try if any of this sounds like it suits your tastes.

Another game currently generating a buzz on Steam is the newly released Hades 2. The sequel to the roguelike hit is also in Early Access, but already has an average of almost 70,000 people roaming the underworld.
