Minecraft still manages to impress even after 16 years. One user has now built an AI language model in the game.

Among Minecraft builders, there is a very special group that specializes in Redstone devices, which make most players’ heads spin just watching them. One such tinkerer has now actually built a functioning AI model in the block game.

ChatGPT completely in Minecraft

The heyday of Minecraft structures is actually already over. At the latest after modders succeeded in playing Minecraft in Minecraft, the game seemed to have reached its limit.

A new  project by well-known Minecraft YouTuber sammyuri now shows that this is not entirely true. He has built a functioning language model in Minecraft, which he calls “CraftGPT.” Here are the key facts:

  • The project consists of 1,020 x 260 x 1,656 blocks, for a total of just under 439 million blocks
  • It was built using data from  TinyChat .
  • Without MCHPRS (Minecraft High-Performance Redstone Server), it would take about ten years to generate a single response, so it still takes a few hours
  • To load the server, 32 GB of RAM is required, but ideally 64 GB or more is needed.

To illustrate the project, the YouTuber, who previously built a 1 Hz CPU in Minecraft, has published a video showing the dimensions, structure, and functionality of the project:

According to sammyuri, however, the conversation shown in the video is already the absolute best-case scenario. According to the user, the language model is very prone to changing the subject, producing grammatical errors, or generating complete nonsense.

Interested Minecraft players should therefore not expect a real alternative to ChatGPT, Gemini, and the like. However, the project shows once again how sophisticated and powerful the sandbox game, released in 2009, still is. Next, all that’s missing is for someone to build CraftGPT in a version of Minecraft that runs within Minecraft itself. But maybe that’s taking things a bit too far.
