When “too easy” is suddenly no longer an option

Fans of Elden Ring Nightreign can prepare themselves for a real test. Those who felt that the co-op adventure was too easy despite its sinister bosses and dangerous areas can soon look forward to a new hurdle. FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco have unveiled an additional difficulty level that is already causing quite a stir.

The mode bears the evocative name “The Depths of Night” – and this title alone makes it clear that players will not be given any gifts here. The challenge officially starts on September 11, 2025. It is primarily aimed at those who have already fought their way through countless night battles and are now looking for an even tougher test.

“The depth increases with every victory and every defeat”

According to the development team, the expansion relies on a system that dynamically changes the level of difficulty. “In addition, the difficulty increases the deeper you descend,” according to the official Bandai Namco website. Victories and defeats determine how far a player advances – and how brutal the battles become. Those who make it to Depth 3 can count themselves among the true masters. But that’s only the beginning: Depths 4 and 5 promise endless, almost hopeless confrontations.
The conditions are also more stringent. Not only do opponents become stronger, but you also lose the ability to choose your next Nightlord yourself. Landscape changes from the standard version are omitted, leaving players to rely on chance and instinct.

There is one small consolation: exclusive items that can only be obtained in “The Depths of Night” provide additional motivation. At the same time, however, there is the threat of so-called “adverse effects” that can cause even professionals to struggle. So it’s clear: this mode is no walk in the park, but rather the ultimate test of endurance, nerves, and teamwork.
