Elden Ring Nightreign gets off to a less spectacular start than expected: one thing in particular is letting it down

With Elden Ring Nightreign FromSoftware delivers a spin-off that promises familiar darkness and rough co-op mode. Players fight alone or in teams of three through short day-night cycles, while the mysterious Night’s Tide encircles the map, closing in. This principle heightens the drama – right up to the final battle against the dreaded Nightlord

Nightreign unleashes ancient chains

There are eight classes to choose from, each with its own ultimate ability and special strengths. Relics and permanent upgrades are intended to provide long-term motivation, but many reviews criticize the lack of progression mechanics between runs. Without any real rewards after the main boss missions, the desire to continue playing noticeably wanes.

In addition to content weaknesses, technical problems are making headlines. Solo players report jerky frame rates, sporadic crashes, and inconsistent enemy balance. On SteamDB reached Nightreign briefly exceeded 50,000 concurrent players at launch, but the retention rate fell by 30% in the first week.

Although the dark graphics deliver atmospheric cutscenes and the sound design scores with powerful boss melodies, a bitter aftertaste remains. Without crossplay, the multiplayer mode falls short of the potential that the community knows from the main game.

Brilliant combat and missing shadows

Despite all the criticism, Nightreign shines in its moments of glory. The boss fights feature impressive animations and tactical depth that will make even veterans of the main game break a sweat. On PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, the game impresses with epic arenas where light and shadow tell their own story.

However, the trade press remains divided: Metacritic lists PS5 and PC at around 78 points, Xbox at 86. The German magazine PC Games praises the atmosphere, but criticizes the lack of gameplay flow in solo mode. GamePro also criticizes insufficient endgame incentives and the lack of cross-play functionality.

In response, FromSoftware has already announced a comprehensive balance patch for mid-June. The goal is to adjust spawn rates, stabilize servers, and add rewards for repeatedly defeating bosses. Insiders also report possible free DLCs that could enhance the endgame – a model that has proven successful in similar titles such as Dark Souls.

For around 40 euros, role-playing fans will get an experience that combines ambitious team battles with an atmospheric world starting May 30. Those who grab it now will experience thrilling highlights – and can hope that upcoming updates will dispel the downsides.
