At the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners beat out fierce competition. Even some fans can’t believe it.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has been named Anime of the Year 2023! And even some of the most loyal fans didn’t expect this, because the competition was not of bad parents. The Netflix series for the role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077 was able to hold its own against anime heavyweights like Spy x Family or Demon Slayer.

What exactly did Edgerunners win?

At the 2023 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners took first place in two categories: Studio Trigger’s series won in the English-language drama, but more excitingly, Edgerunners was actually voted Anime of the Year

Before that, the cyberpunk series was nominated in a total of 12 categories – including best character design, best new anime series, best score or best action anime. In the end, however, it was only enough to win in two categories. By the way, you can find all winners and nominees of the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2023 (under this link).

This is how fans and the showrunner react

Fans of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are appropriately giddy that their new favourite series was able to dominate in perhaps the most important category of the Cruncyroll Awards. Even considering the truly mighty competitionwhich last year consisted of hit series like Demon Slayer, Spy x Family and of course Attack on Titan.

For example, Reddit user (quortza) sums it up quite succinctly:

It’s insane how many absolute 10/10 series came out last year, so that was probably the toughest category for [Cyberpunk: Edgerunners] to prevail in. “Absolutely deserved though.

Naturally, the (official Twitter account of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) also reacted to the happy news. (Showrunner Rafal Jaki) doesn’t hold back quite so much in his choice of words, clearly stating his delight at the victory:

What about a season 2?

Despite the groundbreaking success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which even had an impact on the 2077 role-playing game, there probably won’t be a second season of the Netflix series. After all, the anime was planned as a standalone project from the beginning and there are no official plans on the part of CD Projekt Red to change this, at least not at the moment.

Whether CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger will produce a second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners remains questionable, of course. The possibility cannot be completely ruled out – especially considering how much the fans are behind the TV series.

What do you think of the fact that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was voted anime of the year? Do you think another series should have won? Would you like to see a season 2? Let us know in the comments!
