Skill-based matchmaking will apparently not disappear in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, the feature is set to be revamped, according to an insider.

Few features have sparked such heated debate within the Call of Duty gaming community since 2019’s Modern Warfare reboot: Skillbased Matchmaking, abbreviated SBMM. And even with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 announced for 2022, players are already asking whether the function will be on board again.

Officially, there is no answer to this yet, because so far the shooter has only been confirmed. Most of the information on the successor to the shooter therefore comes mainly from leaks and rumours, which we summarise for you elsewhere:

CoD Modern Warfare 2: We know a surprising amount about Call of Duty 2022 (UPDATE)

And there are those same rumours at the SBMM as well. In that case, the report comes from the pen of well-known and usually well-informed CoD insider Ralph, who confirmed the existence of the controversial matchmaking feature on Twitter.

SBMM in Modern Warfare 2 – but improved

On paper, Skillbased Matchmaking ensures that multiplayer lobbies in Call of Duty are filled with players who are all at a similar level of play. This is supposed to make for fair matches where one or two players don’t dominate and players with less experience give up in frustration because they get shot down all the time.

The criticism of many players about this: every match is exhausting, you always have to give your best. A simple round in multiplayer mode is hardly possible any more, unless you deliberately trick the system. For this reason, players have been hoping that the SBMM will no longer be used in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

According to insider Ralph, however, this is not the case. The SBMM is also said to be active in this year’s Call of Duty series. However, in a revised version, while at the same time the disbanding of lobbies after a match is to be preserved for all future games.

How exactly the system will be revised, however, Ralph does not reveal. He does, however, explain in another tweet that the SBMM is supposed to be less intrusive. In addition, the system would come from the developer Demonware, who has been working on this matchmaking system for Activision for years.

This is in line with information from well-known insider Tom Henderson, who spoke of the SBMM remaining part of Call of Duty as early as October 2021

What about Warzone 2?

If the rumours surrounding matchmaking for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are confirmed, then this should also apply to Warzone 2. The successor to the battle royale is also being developed by Infinity Ward and will be based on the same technology.

The developers and Activision themselves have not yet made any statements on the subject. Until the real announcement, which will probably take place in the summer, nothing is likely to change.

Now it’s up to you: What do you think of SBMM? Does the matchmaking feature bother you as much or is the topic not so important to you? Feel free to write us your opinion in the comments!
