The dungeon crawler impresses with fast-paced combat, entirely new class builds, and the fresh dimension “The Sift,” but it’s noticeably shorter than its competitors.
Since its initial release in 2009, Minecraft has become a phenomenon—one that continues to enjoy immense popularity. In 2020, the dungeon crawler Minecraft Dungeons was released as a successful spin-off that turned the blocky world into a Diablo-style adventure. Six years later, the sequel is here—and it’s making a big impact. Minecraft Dungeons 2 features a new dimension called “The Sift,” which will also be introduced in Minecraft in 2027. This is a big deal, as it’s the first new world in more than 14 years. Is Minecraft Dungeons 2 the perfect way to prepare for it?
Of course, you’ll need a reason to battle your way through the Minecraft biomes. A new threat looms, threatening to upset the balance of nature. To counter this, brave heroes and heroines are needed—you can play Minecraft Dungeons 2 alone or with others. Simply put: You need to get to the root of the problem and solve it. Along the way, countless enemies will stand in your way, offering up tons of loot—a win-win situation, so to speak.
Which brings us straight to a new dimension, because the threat comes—surprise!—from there. Time and again, as the game progresses, you’ll find yourself transported to this fresh new world by entering and closing rifts. There, you’ll be greeted by a vibrant visual style featuring a distinctive blend of bright colors like neon blue and pink, a blue-green sky, and soft, orange-hued grass. This new addition feels unique and stands out from the other regions in more ways than just its visuals. The monsters waiting for you here also feature unique designs that fit the environment.

More Dynamism in Combat: Leap Attacks, Armor Pieces, and Flexible Builds
At its core, Minecraft Dungeons 2 retains the gameplay flow that worked so well in its predecessor and has always inspired me to take a quick run here and there. You have your main weapon and a bow. On top of that, there are three active abilities that can be customized using items—you can also heal yourself repeatedly (after a cooldown) and perform dodge rolls. This way, the game is designed to appeal not only to hardcore action-RPG fans but also to remain interesting for younger audiences.
The difficulty level is adjustable, but Minecraft Dungeons 2 isn’t a full-fledged replacement for games like Diablo 4 or Path of Exile 2. It’s simply more beginner- and family-friendly, more colorful, and I’d say you have to like this style to fully enjoy it all. However, the development team has tweaked various aspects and added new features. In the sequel, for example, you can now jump—my memory had already pushed aside the fact that this wasn’t possible in the first game. On the one hand, this allows for powerful jump attacks, and on the other, these movements let you reach the occasional spot with hidden loot.

Other adjustments to the formula include character builds, enchanting, and equipment in general. The developers have split up the individual armor sets from the first game, so you now have separate slots for helmet, chest plate, leg guards, and boots. At the same time, this allows for combinations of different armor sets if you want a more unique or colorful look. Additionally, you can equip up to three talismans, which grant you passive bonuses and level up as you use them.
Unreal Engine 5 and the Enchantsmith: Larger Worlds, Enchantments, and Co-op Convenience
You can gain even more power by enchanting items at the Enchantsmith in villages. Scattered throughout the game world, you’ll find enchantment books whose spells you can then apply to items. This allows you to, for example, imbue a weapon with electric damage or cause enemies to be poisoned. Furthermore, weapons, armor, and artifacts vary in strength, rarity, random effects, enchantments, and attack patterns—so over time, you’ll have a great deal of flexibility when it comes to customizing your build.

You’ll experience your adventure in a larger, cohesive world consisting of expansive, interconnected areas. In addition to the main missions, you’ll find villages, side quests, and procedurally generated dungeons and rifts. Ultimately, you can set your own pace to a certain extent by choosing to skip optional tasks or dungeons for now—but where’s the fun in that? The dungeon crawler benefits from the switch to the latest version of Unreal Engine 5, which results in improved lighting and better visibility during combat.
At the same time, Minecraft Dungeons 2 is the perfect game if you want to team up with others to take down enemies. You can do this with up to four players—either locally on one screen or online. You can even combine both options, for example, by having two people play on one device while two others join via the internet. There’s also cross-play matchmaking, party codes, and a friends list. Plus, you can manage your collected items all at once using a new mini-inventory.

Loot Hunting After the Story: Soul Storms and Dynamic Class System
Once you’ve completed the story, you can either wait for the upcoming DLCs. On the other hand, the team is introducing the new Soul Storms. In these events, entire areas are overrun by stronger and larger groups of enemies. Just keep in mind that these are time-limited events that aren’t always available—but they’ll reward you with higher-quality loot and are meant to encourage you to experiment with your builds. That’s exactly the advantage of the system in Minecraft Dungeons 2. Since you don’t choose a permanent class or allocate fixed skill points, you can adapt flexibly to different situations simply by switching your gear.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 – Review Summary
If you’re in the mood for an action RPG but don’t want to dive into the more complex titles like Diablo 4 or Path of Exile 2, Minecraft Dungeons 2 is once again an excellent alternative. It has a fast-paced gameplay flow; you can flexibly adapt your playstyle and quickly squeeze in a short run whenever you have a spare moment if you don’t have a lot of time to spare. I like the colorful look, and it’s simply a fantastic adaptation of the Minecraft style into a completely different genre. As in the previous game, the actual building aspect of the original doesn’t play a role, but that’s okay. If you want to mow down hordes of enemies and rake in loot, you’ve come to the right place—especially at the fair price of around 30 euros.
