Square Enix announced big news at the D23 Showcase. The action RPG kicks off the “Lost Master Arc” on PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch 2.
Kingdom Hearts 4 finally has a release window: late 2027.
A new trailer at Disney’s D23 Showcase 2026 confirmed this great news. The video also brought a whole host of other announcements related to Kingdom Hearts. Among them are a new world inspired by the Pixar film *Coco* and an animated *Kingdom Hearts* series.
Target Platforms, Anniversary, and the New Lost Master Arc
This means Kingdom Hearts 4 will be released in the West just in time for the series’ 25th anniversary. The release is planned for Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
This is a much more concrete announcement than we’ve been used to from Square Enix. Previous updates mostly consisted of Director Tetsuya Nomura reassuring fans that development was proceeding “according to plan.” However, he never specified a concrete timeframe for completion.
Kingdom Hearts 4 introduces a brand-new storyline: the Lost Master Arc. The story picks up directly where the events of Kingdom Hearts 3 left off. The main setting is Quadratum—a massive, realistic hub city that strongly resembles Tokyo. Aside from a handful of teaser trailers and Nomura’s regular reassurances, this is the first time Square Enix has provided a concrete release window for the project.
Square Enix Denies Allegations of AI-Generated Content
Earlier this month, there were other headlines from the franchise, by the way.Developer and publisher Square Enix firmly rejected accusations that it had used AI-generated content for the promotion of the upcoming Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3.
As early as the beginning of June, fans accused the company of using artificial intelligence. Now—a good two months after the initial allegations—Square Enix has finally responded. The studio emphasized: “Our development team created these assets entirely without the use of generative AI. The errors that occurred are simply due to human error.”
