To mark the studio’s 10th anniversary, Creative Director Alexander Mishulin looks to the future. In addition to classic CRPGs like Warhammer 40K, a sci-fi adventure is also in the works.
Owlcat Games is celebrating its tenth anniversary, and the studio is doing quite well. It has enjoyed success with hardcore role-playing games so far, and plans to continue down that path in the future.
To mark the anniversary, Creative Director Alexander Mishulin spoke withPCGamesNabout the team’s history and its future.
Commitment to the CRPG Genre and New Design Approaches
“We’ll continue to develop CRPGs because we simply love them,” says Mishulin. At the same time, the studio wants to experiment: “We don’t want to stand still. That’s why we’re trying out different approaches for our role-playing games. We’re always looking for the path that best fits each game’s concept.”
“We want to create the best possible RPGs. We love this genre; we play these games ourselves and draw inspiration from them. That’s exactly the feeling we want our own games to convey. We develop games that we enjoy playing ourselves, and we hope they’ll inspire other developers to create even better titles in the future.”
The upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, the sequel to Rogue Trader, stays true to Owlcat’s roots. One of the studio’s experiments, meanwhile, is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, which is more reminiscent of Mass Effect.
Workforce Growth, Studio Headquarters, and Release Timelines
In recent years, the studio has expanded significantly to handle all of this. It now employs around 600 people.
Owlcat Games was originally founded in Moscow, but its headquarters are now located in Paphos, Cyprus. While The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is scheduled for release in the spring of 2027, no exact release date has been set for Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy.
