Creative Assembly has unveiled the actual world map and confirmed the first playable factions. But there are more to come.
There was another major developer stream from Creative Assembly focused on Total War: Medieval 3. The strategy game, which fans have been hoping for for years, was announced in December 2025 and is currently in an early stage of development.
But the developers want to be very transparent with the community and are already showing a lot of the game, even though nothing is finished yet and a lot of details haven’t even been finalized. The latest stream also focused on the playable factions in Medieval 3 and where they operate on the world map. Six have already been confirmed, but more are expected to follow.Which ones? You get to help decide.
You can conquer the world with these factions
It was important to the developers to emphasize that these factions are playable factions. This doesn’t mean, however, that there won’t be even more nations and the like in the game. They just won’t all be playable at launch.
Six factions that the developers absolutely do not want to do without have already been confirmed. Some of them are, of course, pretty obvious. You’ll definitely be able to play as the following factions in Medieval 3:
- The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation:The vast central empire that was primarily located in the territory of present-day Germany.
- England:Great Britain doesn’t exist yet, but you can try to annex neighboring states as England.
- France:Of course, you can also play as France and then have a proper showdown with the English.
- Byzantine Empire:The former Eastern Roman Empire has evolved into Byzantium and primarily rules over parts of Turkey and Greece.
- Sultanate of the Rum Seljuks: This empire, which is also located in Turkey but extends even further east, is closely intertwined with Byzantium. Persian influences can also be found here, and it would later give rise to the Ottoman Empire.
- Kingdom of Jerusalem:The Christian kingdom was founded after the First Crusade and the conquest of the Holy City.
Consequently, further Crusades and jihads will also shape this empire.

But of course, it won’t stop at just these six factions. Creative Assembly is still discussing how many additional playable factions will be included in the game at launch. However, a survey is currently underway to find out which factions fans definitely want to play by the time the game is released.& nbsp; You can take part in the survey here.
You can cast four votes, which of course suggests that at least four more factions will be added to the game. But as mentioned, this isn’t set in stone yet. The following factions are up for selection:
Table of Contents
Italian City-States
- Republic of Venice
- Republic of Genoa
- Republic of Pisa

Again: All of these empires will likely be included in the game, but only a few of them will be playable at launch. Which ones will be available depends on your choice. That said, CA reserves the right to make its own decisions. After all, the selection is meant to offer quite a bit of variety.
The World Keeps Growing
During the stream, it was (unsurprisingly) confirmed that there will likely be DLCs to expand the world. This can be inferred from the fact that the developers frequently emphasized “at launch.” These remarks were made in reference to both the selection of playable factions and the size of the world map. This naturally suggests that not only will additional factions become playable over the course of Medieval 3’s support cycle, but that the world map will also be expanded to include additional regions.
