The first Gears of War was released in 2006 on the Xbox 360 and is considered an absolute classic that helped make the cover-based shooter genre a success. Its dark setting and brutal combat quickly became its hallmark.

However, the most recent Gears installments in particular failed to match the success of the original, and the series was eventually put on hold for 7 years.

WithGears of War: E-Day, the series returns to its 2000s roots and tells a prequel story set before the events of the first game. This time, without any questionable open-world experiments like those in Gears 5.

In our preview, Dimi explains why this could be exactly the right path back to success.

Gears of War: E-Day will be released on October 6, 2026, on current-generation Xbox consoles and PC.
