Finally, the first gameplay footage for Metro 2039 is here! The new trailer shows destructible levels and reveals the release window for the dark shooter.
The Xbox Games Showcase has delivered once again:4A Games has unveiled nearly three minutes of actual in-game footage for the upcomingMetro 2039. The dark shooter franchise is returning with a vengeance—but it’s not just bringing a oppressive atmosphere and new gameplay mechanics; it’s also going to require a bit of patience from you.
From Protector to Tyrant
Times have changed dramatically in the Moscow Metro:If you were hoping to find a reasonably stable society underground, the new trailer will quickly prove you wrong.
The former hero and Spartan Ranger Hunter has seized absolute power. Using lies and propaganda, he has formed a fanatical regime and transformed the remnants of the once-glorious and selfless Spartan Order into a full-fledged dictatorship.
You take on the role of the so-called Stranger:Driven by rage and hatred for this new system, you enter the underground war to hold Hunter accountable for his hypocrisy. According to the developers, the Stranger will not rest until the new leader and his empire are in flames.
Destruction, Stealth, and a New Weapon
In terms of gameplay, Metro 2039 seamlessly builds on its proven survival and stealth roots:Exploring the dark tunnels and the hostile surface ruins remains oppressive and dangerous.
Particularly exciting for the game mechanics:For the first time, destructible environmental elements are making their way into the series. When cover slowly crumbles under enemy fire, it forces you to keep moving constantly and adapt your tactics dynamically.
To still be able to operate silently from the shadows, the game puts the brand-new stealth weapon “Shatun” in your hands. And if the stealthy approach fails, a new type of explosive expands your arsenal for a louder approach.
Despite all the excitement sparked by the fresh gameplay, there’s a slight letdown for those who can’t wait to put their gas masks back on. The release of Metro 2039 is currently scheduled for February 2027. The shooter will be available for PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store) as well as for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
