The end of Destiny 2 is approaching, and many players are now taking out their frustration on Steam. The target of the review bombing: Bungie’s new shooter, Marathon.

The end ofDestiny 2is fast approaching, and the community is seething with rage. Bungie’s announcement that it willfinally pull the plug on the sci-fi MMO after a final update in June has sent shockwaves through the player base.

While some are bidding a wistful farewell and thanking the developers for the years-long journey, others are desperately searching for a scapegoat. And they seem to have found one right within Bungie itself: the new PvP extraction shooterMarathon.

The community’s absurd theory

Why is it Marathon, of all things?A wild theory has taken on a life of its own on social media.

Some players are firmly convinced that Sony and Bungie are intentionally sacrificing the long-established Destiny 2 to give Marathon a fighting chance in the highly competitive live-service market.

The logic behind it: If Marathon hadn’t gone through such arocky developmentprocess, the resources would have gone into a much-needed reboot or even a full-fledged sequel to Destiny 2.

The fact that this argument is severely flawed and that Destiny 2’s structural problems run much deeper hardly matters to the angry fans.

Venting frustration on Steam

A glance at the current reviews shows just how much players’ anger is focused on the new shooter. Within a few days, hundreds of negative reviewspoured in, noticeably dragging the score down.

Here are a few examples of how players are expressing their displeasure:

  • »[…] But I think killing the Destiny universe was a mistake. And here’s the result: a negative review.«Meadow
  • “I’d rather have another Slop expansion for Destiny 2 than this.”Jee
  • “Destiny deserves better.”Sasaki Haise
  • “You killed Destiny 2!”flexflux
  • “You’d better focus on Destiny 2.”zyrvns

Marathon fans, in turn, are not leaving this unwarranted attack unanswered.Shortly after the review bombing began, resistance formed, and hundreds of positive reviews flooded the Steam page to set the record straight.

Self-Inflicted Problems

If we look back honestly at the past few years, Destiny 2 has dug its own grave. Even before the release of the Star Wars expansion Renegades in 2025—which was torn apart by fans—the foundation was crumbling badly.

Numerous missteps, long content droughts, and an often unclear visionultimately led the sci-fi MMO to this inglorious point. It’s completely understandable that fans are mourning a universe into which they’ve invested so much time, money, and passion. The anger is absolutely understandable.

But making an innocent game like Marathon a scapegoat does absolutely nothing to change the fate of the loot shooter.Bungie is now focusing on the futureand plans, among other things, new PvE modes for Marathon in the first year.

Whether that will ultimately be enough to make the shooter successful in the long run remains to be seen.
