What do the super cool people at GlobalESportNews actually do after work and at the weekend? What games keep them busy away from work and testing? Which books can’t they put down? Which movie keeps them glued to the screen?

I also asked my wonderful colleagues these questions and would now like to share them with you:Welcome to our new format “GlobalESportNews after work”!

From now on, I, Natalie, will be digging up the most exciting insider tips from the editorial team for you every Sunday. Whether it’s indie games, books, comics, films, series, board games, puzzle websites, podcast recommendations, or or or – there’s room for everything here.

Also super important: Of course, we don’t just want to share our insider tips, but also get to know yours! So feel free to put your recommendations in the comments! And who knows, maybe you’ll find them somewhere in the article in the next issue.

Grab a coffee, sit back and enjoy the recommendations from Fabiano, Mary, Tristan and yours truly. But please don’t burn your toast!

The Drifter made it into your insider tips in the GS community vote for the best games of 2025- and that’s the only way I became aware of this little game! At first glance, The Drifter looks like an ordinary point-and-click adventure game. But behind the chic pixel graphics, there’s an incredibly exciting storyline and some intense action moments that really got my pulse racing. But let’s start from the beginning:

I slip into the role of Mick, a hobo who hops from one place to the next. On the way to his home town, he unexpectedly witnesses a murder and stumbles straight into a huge conspiracy. Since Mick is not a well-trained secret agent and his knees and hips are no longer good for silent escape maneuvers, he is caught right at the start of the game … and killed cold as ice. Good game, 10/10.

Little joke, of course it doesn’t end here! Because Mick wakes up a few seconds before his death – and gets the chance to do things differently and free himself from the dicey situation. The Drifter repeatedly throws me into nasty situations in which I have to find a solution quickly. There is absolutely no time to leisurely read item descriptions or – for whatever reason – try to combine a wrench with a computer cable. I have to be nimble and make the right decisions at lightning speed. The fast-paced sequences make me sweat like I’m in one of those “cut the red wire” moments in an action blockbuster.

After all the stress, the game also gives me regular breaks to catch my breath. The story itself takes its time to introduce me to the characters and their motivations, fates and relationships. The Drifter plays wonderfully old-school in these moments, before revving up again for the action scenes. It’s a classic point-and-click adventure with a fantastic modern twist, great English voice acting and a beautiful pixel style. Thank you, dear community, for bringing this gaming gem to my attention!

Steam tip: The Drifter

For fans of: Adventures, point and click, cool thriller stories

Steam tip: News Tower

For fans of: Management, History, Construction

I always have to smile when I hear that Farming Simulator is played a lot by farmers and Euro Truck Simulator is played a lot by truck drivers. I then laugh heartily and think to myself: “Why would anyone play something privately that is like their work?”. Then I log out of the editorial office, fire up Steam and start … er, News Tower.

But News Tower is only remotely like my everyday editorial life. Because in News Tower, I take on responsibility for an entire newspaper. In the middle of New York in the early 1930s. In another life, I would have loved to have been a journalist at that time. When the internet didn’t take so much of the legwork out of it and articles had to be ready for print on time for the Sunday deadline.

I know that’s a lot of romanticizing, but that’s exactly why I like a game like News Tower so much. The atmosphere draws me straight into the daily hustle and bustle of a weekly newspaper and I’m on tenterhooks the whole time. After all, I have to assign my editors to the best stories, then arrange them sensibly in my paper and deal with all kinds of inquiries from the mayor, the military or even the mafia.

There really is always something to do in News Tower. The game is crammed with content right down to the last headline and the sprint from one sensational story to the next, every week anew – it just grabs and swallows up every spare minute I have. Even in bed, I think to myself: “Oh, I can still play quickly for another week.”

Someone has to print the story about the senator’s affair – or maybe the story about the Boston knife murderer? Wait, I’ve got it: everyone is interested in Prohibition again! But wait, what’s going on in Europe … oh yes, Hitler. Now I’m glad to be a journalist again in this day and age.

Book tip: Elfenkrone

For fans of: Intrigue, fairies and elves (the evil kind), spies

Genre: Fantasy – Author: Holly Black – Release: May 2020 – Price: 25 euros |Pages: 448

Protagonist Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered in front of her eyes. The murderer, a bloodthirsty general of the elves and father of her half-sister, abducts the three siblings to the magical parallel world and the court of the elven king. But instead of harboring escape fantasies, Jude only wants one thing after a few years: to belong. But since this is anything but easy among the inhuman and immortal fae, Jude has to earn his place in their midst – with blood, intrigue and fear of death.

Elven Crown is the first volume of the Folk of Air trilogy. But don’t let the ‘romance’ label mislead you, because you won’t find much in the way of love, affection or any other comforting, warm feelings. One of the reasons for this is that Holly Black manages not to make elves too human. The magical creatures are often emotionless, calculating and unbending, which always results in exciting dynamics between elves and humans.

If you love characters who act morally questionable and whose motives are not clear until the end, if you skip sex scenes in books and prefer to concentrate on the intrigue part and if you usually know who the traitor is right from the start, you should definitely take a look at the trilogy – you will be pleasantly surprised.

Movie tip: They Will Kill You

During the screening of They Will Kill You, I looked at my watch. I expected to be about halfway through, but in fact I only had 20 minutes to go. Boredom? Not a chance, the time flew by!

They Will Kill You knows exactly what it wants to be and wastes no time in delivering it. Action, gallons of blood, absurdities and a pinch of humor.

This is what it’s all about: Former prison inmate Asia Reaves (Zazie Beetz) goes to the suspicious Virgil Hotel to find her sister (Myha’La). There she is confronted by a 100-year-old devil cult that wants to sacrifice her.

Asia manages to fight back violently, but the devil followers just won’t stay dead and keep coming back. What follows is almost 90 minutes of splatter that seriously manages to get more and more freaky from start to finish. To put it in perspective, the first half already features a chase sequence lasting several minutes with an eyeball shot out.

They Will Kill You is, for better or worse, tasteless from start to finish, but shines with clever action interludes, great characters, some exciting twists and a worthy finale.

Of course, I’m incredibly interested in how you like this new format! Do you have any suggestions on what we could do better? Let me know in the comments! And don’t forget to leave your insider tips. See you next week!
