A former Warhorse employee is currently claiming to have unexpectedly lost his job, sparking the anger of the community.

Update fromMarch 31

In the meantime, Warhorse has also responded to our request and published a statement. You can now also read the unchanged version translated by us in this message:

Warhorse Studios has always been a talent-driven studio, and we deeply value the people who shape our work. Out of respect for the privacy and dignity of both current and former colleagues, we will not discuss individual situations publicly.

Warhorse Studios has always been talent-driven and we deeply value the people who shape our work. Out of respect for the privacy and dignity of both current and former colleagues, we will not discuss individual situations publicly.

Original message from March 30:

The fan community surroundingKingdom Come: Deliveranceis generally very positive about the development studio behind it. After all, they see it as one of the last bastions of studios that still develop large and technically complex games – without resorting to exploitative monetization tricks.

However, the studio’s reputation is in danger of tipping over. A post by a former employee on Reddit is causing a lot of outrage. We are talking about Max Hejtmánek, who worked as a translator at Warhorse until recently.

As he explains in a long post, however, he says he has now lost this job without any warning. Hejtmánek was laid off on March 27 and, according to him, there was only one reason for this:He became obsolete due to AI translations.

“It was a big shock”

So far, we only know the details of the story from Max Hejtmánek’s perspective. It also seems certain that the author of the post is the aforementioned Max Hejtmánek. It also appears that he really did work as a translator at Warhorse until recently.

According to him, the dismissal was probably completely unexpected. He is said to have had only a few days before he had to vacate his desk. Warhorse is also said to have openly stated that he was being made redundant in order to translate more of the text in their games using AI:

I was summoned to a meeting and told that my position would become obsolete from next month in order to “make the company more effective” and “to save money” by using AI for translations in the future. That was a big shock for me. […] naively, I thought that my work at Warhorse was valued too much to be threatened with redundancy.

According to Max Hejtmánek, there had been internal discussions about AI translation for a long time, but he had always vehemently opposed them. Now he feels “incredibly betrayed”, as he has come to appreciate Warhorse over the last four years.

Hejtmánek’s post, according to him, is not intended to attack Warhorse from fans or to harass individuals responsible for Warhorse. He also doesn’t want their games to be review-bombed. Above all, he wants fans to see how generative AI affects people in the games industry and how little the companies behind the games actually value their employees.

The stand of Warhorse on AI

From Warhorse itself, there are few concrete announcements about where the studio stands on the use of generative AI and whether or not much more than translations will be created by machine forces in their games in the future.

However, the controversial studio co-founder Daniel Vávra has already made several positive statements about AI and the new possibilities on social media. Zuletzt beispielsweise wiedergegenüber DLSS 5. According to Vavra, AI is inevitable

.

Vávra himself is still employed at Warhorse, but has recently withdrawn from game development. His new creative focus is now on the production of films, including Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Nevertheless, it is of course quite conceivable that other leading personnel at Warhorse are also very open to AI.
