The almost 30-year-old anime is to be completely remade – also at the creator’s request.
We’ve known for a while that the original anime of One Pieceis to be given a complete overhaul with a remake. After all, the series has been running since 1998, during which time a lot has changed in terms of both technical and narrative standards.
If you haven’t had anything to do with Ruffy and his crew yet, the easiest way to get started is with the live-action series on Netflix. However, anyone venturing into the 1,000-episode-long anime in 2026 could quickly be put off –at least according to creator Eiichiro Oda.
For the new generation
George Wada is the producer of WIT Studio, which is behind the remake of the anime for Netflix. In an interview on theYouTube channel Ai Showhe talks about what the driving forces behind the project are.
The reason we’re doing the remake is something that author Eiichiro Oda said. He said that One Piece is very long and full of details. Since it launched so long ago, the new generation has gotten used to modern productions and can no longer feel the same joy towards the old animations.
Oda regretted this and wanted to make it possible for this new generation to follow the story of One Piece. To this end, the remake will use more modern animation techniques that are more suited to today’s audience.
The YouTube video itself is no longer available, but you can see the corresponding excerpt here:

Wada goes on to explain that the original anime no longer meets modern production standards. This is where the remake comes in. It should be more tightly paced and do without unnecessary stretching. This should allow the stories to be told more quickly.
Broadcasting on Netflix should also be helpful for the new approach. The original anime used to be broadcast on television on a weekly basis, which also had an impact on the pace of the story. The remake, on the other hand, will be released exclusively on Netflix. If you want to keep the audience here, you often can’t afford to be leisurely.
WIT Studio, a renowned studio that has already adapted Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga and Spy x Family as an anime series, is also working on the remake. However, it is not yet known when the remake of One Piece will begin.
