My friend, the Deathclaw. Sounds far-fetched? According to one of the creatures’ creators, Amazon may want to introduce you to this idea.
The second season of the Amazon series based on Fallout is currently airing, and as the trailers have already revealed, viewers can expect to see one of the worst creatures in the wasteland: the Deathclaw. Warning, spoilers for episode 4 of the series follow.
The episode ends with Lucy and the ghoul encountering one of the towering creatures. Jonah Lobe, the creator of Deathclaws in Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4, immediately noticed something and has an exciting theory about it.
Man’s best enemy?
The Deathclaws in the series are based on the version from Fallout 4 – “his babies,” as the former Bethesda developer calls them. However, Jonah Lobe noticed a big difference between his monsters, which he really likes, as he explains in a Reddit post.
I made the Deathclaws in F3/NV/F4 — and I HAVE A THEORY!

He has a special theory about this. His idea of the Deathclaw was a cold-blooded killer that spreads fear and terror.
The head of his Deathclaws was flat, with a huge jaw and eyes with drooping eyelids to make them look narrower and more menacing. You can find a whole video about his Deathclaw design on his YouTube channel.
Lobe explains that Amazon opted for a rounder head with a smaller jaw and something resembling eyebrows. The pink skin around the teeth and eyes allows for a more expressive face. You can see these details in the image from his Reddit post.
To him, this Deathclaw looks more like a mammal, almost like a dog. Lobe believes that viewers should not only see Deathclaws as monsters, so that they can feel genuine sympathy for them in the future. Perhaps there will be friendly Deathclaws in future seasons, according to his theory.
Friendly Deathclaws already exist
However, these were not created by Jonah Lobe, but by John Deiley in Fallout 2. In this game, you can encounter intelligent and talking Deathclaws. In Vault 13, you meet Goris, who can even become your companion. Another deathclaw that is friendly, depending on the player’s decisions, is Xarn.
So it’s not so unlikely that the Amazon series will also feature one or two deathclaws that aren’t murderously intent on eviscerating everything and everyone.
