Saber Interactive is bringing together two of the most famous zombie universes. In January 2026, World War Z x The Walking Dead, an extensive crossover DLC for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, will be released.
The crucial question is: Is it possible for two fundamentally different zombie philosophies to exist at the same time? A standalone campaign chapter with new enemies, familiar characters, and customized level structures provides the answer.
Tighter maps and new dangers
Although the maps have a basic size comparable to previous World War Z missions, they have been made significantly narrower and more claustrophobic. Tighter routes and constant pressure keep players moving as slowly advancing hordes of walkers form.
In addition to familiar special enemies such as Bulls and Bombers from World War Z, a new enemy type is introduced. The Spiked Walker, an enemy with an armored head, inflicts bleeding damage through close combat contact. Striking directly is risky. It is more effective to knock the enemy down from a distance and then take them out with targeted shots.
Three chapters with familiar characters from the series
The DLC offers a new campaign consisting of three chapters and featuring iconic locations and characters from The Walking Dead. Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Michonne, and Negan are playable characters.
The original actors Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan have reprised their roles. In the first chapter, the group enters the abandoned prison that once served as a refuge. What starts as a rescue mission quickly turns into a fight for survival. In the second chapter, the characters return to Alexandria, which is now burning and overrun by walkers. The main focus is on securing the remaining survivors under difficult conditions.
Chapter three is set in Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. There, urgently needed medicine is procured. The environment is now more contaminated than ever, requiring a cautious approach and precise coordination.
New weapons and exclusive equipment
The crossover even brings new content to the game. Rick receives a special revolver skin, while Daryl is equipped with a modified version of his crossbow. Michonne and Negan get new melee weapons. Michonne fights with her katana as usual. Negan once again flattens walkers with his baseball bat “Lucille.”
The equipment is an integral part of the campaign and highlights the differences between the characters in combat.
Launch in January 2026
World War Z x The Walking Dead will be released in January 2026 for PS5 and PS4. The DLC adds a new story to the game and brings slow walkers together with the familiar fast Zekes from World War Z for the first time. This creates a strange but logical connection between two post-apocalyptic universes.
