“An update as big as an entire game”

Anyone who thought they had seen it all is now being proven wrong. Developer Game Science has released a new PS5 update for Black Myth: Wukong – and it’s pushing some people’s storage space to its limits. The patch weighs in at around 93.5 gigabytes, as the studio explained in a social media post. No wonder the community is asking: “Why update when you can just reload it?”

Officially, the team attributes the gigantic size to “different file storage methods.” In practice, this means that unless you have a PS5 with plenty of free space, you’ll hardly be able to install the update without first deleting a bunch of other games. Including the main game, the storage requirement adds up to around 210 gigabytes – a figure that is simply too high for many console owners.

The update itself is intended to bring less new content than a complete reorganization of the game files. In other words, many will end up downloading the game again in its entirety – just to get a few technical adjustments.

Chapter 2: “PC gamers need to be wary of mods”

The situation remains tense on the PC as well – but there, it’s not gigabytes that are causing trouble, but mods. Game Science expressly warns that installed modifications can lead to problems after the patch:  “Installed mods can cause compatibility issues, prevent the game from starting, or trigger error messages during gameplay.”

The studio therefore advises all PC gamers to delete their mod files and check the integrity of the game files before restarting. Otherwise, the Monkey King’s journey could come to an abrupt end in a crash.

For console players, however, the decision remains a pragmatic one: make space or reload everything. Those who opt for the latter will at least be spared the error messages – even if waiting for the download is likely to take almost as long as half a playthrough of the game itself.
