The rumor mill surrounding the next generation of consoles is in full swing. While the PlayStation 5 has not yet disappeared from all living rooms, a leak from Moore’s Law Is Dead is causing quite a stir. According to the leak, Sony is not only working on the standard version of the PlayStation 6, but also on a portable version and a slimmed-down PS6 S.

This smaller version is said to be less powerful, but with a much more attractive price tag. It is said to feature a so-called Canis chip and special RAM, so the hardware would be clearly distinguishable from the basic PS6. For gamers on a smaller budget, this sounds like good news. But not everyone is enthusiastic – on the contrary: discussions on Reddit show that this idea is dividing the community.

“Maybe it’s just me, but if Sony releases a PS6, a PS6 S, and another portable PS6, it’s going to be extremely confusing,” says one widely noted comment. Other voices even see this as a threat to the future of the brand.

“Learned nothing from their mistakes” – fans sound the alarm

The biggest concerns are focused on the performance of the new console generation. Many fans fear that game developers will have to tailor their titles to the weakest hardware in the future – meaning that the full potential of the PS6 will never be exploited. One user sums it up dramatically: “It seems as if Sony hasn’t learned anything from the mistakes of the Xbox.”

For many, the parallel to the Xbox Series S is obvious. Microsoft also faced criticism there because the cheaper console slowed down technical development. If Sony were to follow the same path, this could become a stumbling block for exclusive titles.

On the other hand, optimistic voices see this as an opportunity to broaden the PlayStation 6’s appeal and thus attract price-conscious gamers. As long as Sony does not provide any official information, the uncertainty remains. The only thing that is certain is that expectations for the PS6 have rarely been so high – and the discussions so heated.
