The long wait for Albion’s return

When Microsoft announced the return of Fable in 2020, the excitement was huge. A reboot of the popular role-playing game series, produced by Forza Horizon studio Playground Games, sounded like the perfect combination. The trailers promised a fairy-tale world that was both humorous and mystical – but since then, things have gone suspiciously quiet.

Initial hopes for an early release quickly faded, as each new Xbox showcase made it clear that the project needed time. Microsoft has repeatedly emphasized that quality comes before speed, but the more years that pass, the greater the impatience among fans. Following the official postponement to 2026, the next setback now appears to be looming.

A well-connected Xbox Insider recently claimed on the XboxEra podcast that 2026 is not realistic either. According to his sources, who independently shared the same assessment, we should even expect a release in 2027 at the earliest.
Behind the scenes, things are apparently not running smoothly – even if the reasons for this remain unclear.

With growing uncertainty, many are wondering whether the project is still viable. Microsoft recently canceled several projects, including “Everwild,” “Perfect Dark,” and an ambitious MMO from ZeniMax. In this context, “Fable” also seems vulnerable, especially since hardly any gameplay material or concrete details have been revealed so far.

Officially, Microsoft is sticking with the title – at least for now. Behind closed doors, Playground Games is continuing to work flat out on the game, according to insiders. Rumors about technical difficulties, creative direction changes, and personnel problems have been circulating for some time, but nothing has been confirmed. The studio remains silent – which doesn’t help matters.

Whether “Fable” will ultimately rise like a phoenix from the ashes or quietly fade away is difficult to say at this point. One thing is certain: expectations are huge, and with each passing year, the pressure grows. If it really is 2027, we can only hope that the wait will be worth it in the end.
