Sony’s next console could be released much later than expected
The fact that Sony is developing a new Playstation console has already been officially confirmed. The earliest date has always been 2027, seven years after the launch of the Playstation 5 in 2020 and three years after the release of the Playstation 5 Pro.
A new leak narrows down the release period for the next Playstation console.
The rumor comes from the well-known YouTuber Detective Seeds, who has already revealed information on X several times that has subsequently turned out to be correct.
According to a Playstation engineer working on the hardware side of the house; The PS6 will be announced in 2028 and release late fall/ early winter 2029.

Sony’s Playstation 6 console will therefore not be released before 2029. The leaker further narrows down the time frame to fall / winter of that year. However, Sony is expected to officially announce the new console in 2028 and distribute the first developer kits to the first studios as early as spring 2026.
This would give the following timeline for the launch of the Playstation 6.
- Spring 2026: First developer kits are distributed.
- 2028: Sony officially announces the Playstation 6.
- Autumn / winter 2029: The Playstation 6 goes on sale.
The X user cites a developer who works in Sony’s hardware department as the source.

Devs kits are estimated to be distributed to developers in spring 2026, at the same time the PS5 Pro is expected to get the upgrade to FSR4.
Sony has not yet commented on a time window for the release of the PlayStation 6.
Longer life period for PlayStation 5
If the rumor is true, Sony would give the current console generation another four years, exceeding the eight years of the Playstation 4 by more than a year.
The Playstation 4 was officially released in 2013 and was discontinued by Sony in January 2021.
The last Xbox console from Microsoft, the Xbox One, had a similar lifespan. It was released by Microsoft at the end of 2013 and produced until 2020. Sales then ended between 2021 and 2022.
