In the shadow of the past: a look at the new Mafia adventure

The countdown is on: In a few weeks, the Mafia series returns with The Old Country  – and it’s getting personal. The fourth part leaves the US setting and takes players straight to post-war Sicily. The new gameplay video now provides first impressions of the everyday life of protagonist Enzo Favara, who fights for his place in a world characterized by loyalty, betrayal and violence.

The scenes shown come from the fifth chapter and are set in a magnificent villa, whose beauty stands in stark contrast to the impending escalation. At the beginning, everything seems calm and almost dreamy – but things are bubbling under the surface. The developers have noticeably focused on atmosphere and suspense instead of immediately opening the door.

What makes the new Mafia special: instead of overloaded open-world madness the game delivers a focused story with clear missions. It is precisely this straightforwardness, paired with precise pacing, that could make it a welcome change in the genre.  The Old Country is also visually impressive with stylized lighting moods and cinematic staging – almost like an interactive mafia film.

Those who enjoy a subtle approach will be delighted: The title allows for a quiet approach with throwing knives, combined with crisp exchanges of fire. It is noticeable how carefully the cover, weapon changes and enemy placement have been coordinated – even short scenes appear choreographed.

Mafia: The Old Country – release, gameplay and price surprise

It gets really interesting at the end of the video: That’s where the pace really picks up. Enzo engages in firefights, flees in a car and shows that car chases also play a role again. In this way, the game combines classic Mafia DNA with modern mission design – without relying on epic overlength.

Because unlike many AAA games,The Old Country doesn’t want to fill 100 hours, but rather deliver 10 strong ones. The price reflects this: At around 50 euros, the title remains below the current standard, which should suit many players.

Release is on August 8, 2025 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. If you’re in the mood for concentrated storytelling, a dense atmosphere and action without any idle time, you should make a note of this date.
