Recently EA had four classic role-playing games removed from GOG. Now the games have returned as free versions.

Just a few weeks ago, several old but fan-favourite role-playing games disappeared from the GOG shop: Ultima Underworld 1 and 2, Syndicate Plus and Syndicate Wars were removed from sale at the request of the publisher EA. But now the games are suddenly back – and you can get them for free for a few weeks. What exactly happened?

EA rows back

The four titles are now available again on GOG, as announced on the shop page. And they are available as free bundles that you can keep forever. The only requirement is that you get the games before 3 September 2021 at 7pm.

As justification for the unexpected return, EA writes.

“Syndicate and Ultima Underworld are back! As it seems, even after twenty years, there is still a lot of love for these titles. That’s why we’re excited to confirm that they’re now available again on GOG and we’ll keep them in store for the foreseeable future. To celebrate this, we are offering these games as a free download for four weeks. ”

But with all the praise for EA’s concession, there is also a question that many are now asking:

What if I have bought the games recently?

Many had quickly secured the games when it was announced that they would only be available for a limited time. Although the aged classics only cost a few euros each, it would still have been annoying to get them for free a short time later.

There is no official statement on possible refunds, but some players – including the colleagues from PCGamer – report that they can at least apply for a refund at GOG, even if they got it a long time ago. Typically, you can return games on the shop up to 30 days after purchase. Even if you bought it a few days earlier, you can try your luck here at official support.

Even more free games: Over the weekend you can play some titles for free on Steam, Epic and Co. and keep some of them permanently. For example, the great medieval adventure A Plague Tale: Innocence.
