Hundreds of players gathered in World of Warcraft on Thursday for a protest. In addition to discussing the lawsuit against Activision Blizzard, the protesters are also collecting donations for a charity drive.

A group of World of Warcraft players made a statement against Activision Blizzard on Thursday. After a lawsuit was filed against the company in the US state of California for sexually discriminatory incidents, the players gathered for a virtual sit-in protest. Those gathered discussed the scandal and also collected donations for a charity campaign.

Supporting young female programmers
The protest was organised by the role-playing guild “Fence Macabre”. The guild called on players to gather in WoW at the Idyllia Steps in Oribos. At the same time, they created a charity action in which money was collected for the non-profit organisation Black Girls CODE. This is dedicated to teaching young girls between the ages of seven and 17 how to programme. By Friday evening, the campaign had already raised over 8,000 US dollars. The fundraiser page will remain open until 26 July.

Solidarity for those affected
Hundreds of players turned up to the meeting place. Not only did they show solidarity with those affected, they also took the opportunity to discuss the incidents. As Hinahina Gray, one of the Fence Macabre representatives, told the online magazine Polygon, the players also discussed their withdrawal from the role-playing game. Some have already cancelled their subscription during the protest. The decision was not easy for many users, Gray said. For some players, the WoW communities represented an important support against discrimination.
