Video games are becoming more expensive—the entire industry is gradually raising prices. Obsidian’s sci-fi role-playing game is leading the way for Xbox Game Studios.

It comes as little surprise that Xbox Game Studios is the next publisher to announce its first €80 game. That it’s The Outer Worlds 2, of all things, is perhaps a little surprising. At the Xbox Games Showcase, developer Obsidian Entertainment revealed more about the sequel to the role-playing game, including its new price tag.

The Outer Worlds 2 will cost $80 upon release

The game will officially be the first title from Xbox to join the current industry trend of price increases. A release date and a new trailer were also announced:

The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled for release on October 29, 2025, in a Standard Edition for €80 and a Premium Edition for €100. The more expensive version includes, among other things, access to the game up to five days earlier and a Premium Edition.and a Premium Edition for €100 The more expensive version includes up to five days’ early access to the game and the first two DLCs.

However, the game will also be included in Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription upon release.

Microsoft continues to pave the way

Although The Outer Worlds 2 is Xbox’s first $80 game, Microsoft itself has already implemented the price increase. Bethesda’s latest first-person shooter, Doom: The Dark Ages, was released a little over a month ago with a price tag of $80 for the standard edition.

It is to be expected that upcoming new releases in the AAA sector will increasingly be accompanied by price increases. While Sony is still hesitating with its own games, Nintendo has already started to raise prices.

In keeping with the new console, Mario Kart World is already available as the first game for the Switch 2, which will cost €80 upon release.

The reason why games are becoming more expensive is largely due to the ever-increasing production costs for video games. Experts therefore assume that €80 games will soon be the new standard in the AAA sector.
