Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released on April 24, 2025, for PC, Xbox Series, and PS5, and has since become a true phenomenon. Fans and the press love this JRPG that doesn’t come from Japan, and the title is breaking one record after another. Expedition 33 is now even the game with the best user score on Metacritic – of all time! It has also sold more than two million copies.

Such superlatives immediately raise a few questions: How did this game, of all games, become a symbol of hope? How did a relatively small team manage to pull off such a huge project?

The interesting thing is that Creative Director Guillaume Broche previously worked for industry giant Ubisoft for many years as a producer, brand development manager, and narrative lead. And he says that he could never have created a game like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 there.
