The Space Marine 2 developers have released a tool that makes it much easier for the community to develop new content for the Warhammer shooter. The first projects have already been announced.
Saber Interactive, the development studio behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, apparently wants to follow the same path as Bethesda once did with Skyrim for its successful shooter. Of course, this doesn’t mean that it will be re-released 14 times, but rather that the community will be encouraged to keep the game alive with new content.
A tool has been released that makes it much easier for fans to develop new content for Space Marine 2. They have already announced their first projects and want to add more factions to the game.
New content, easier and faster
Game Director Dmitry Grigorenko spoke up on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord. There, he announced that the official integration studio is now available for public use. This is the same editor tool that Saber Interactive uses internally for development on the shooter. Grigorenko calls this their biggest milestone yet in supporting the modding community.
The first version allows fans to tweak everything related to the game’s gameplay. This includes levels, scenarios, game modes, AI behavior, abilities, combat, user interface, HUD elements, and much more. This makes modding Space Marine 2 much easier and, above all, faster. Grigorenko continues on Discord:
Not too long ago, I promised that we would support the modding community – and we meant it. (…) Seeing this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences is inspiring and humbling. We can’t wait to see what you create next, whether it’s a cinematic campaign, a crazy new game mode, or something completely unexpected.
What’s next?
IGN editor Wesley Yin-Poole asked Warhammer Workshop modder Tom what the community has planned next. Tom is currently planning to add new factions, including theTauandNecrons Suitable character models (rigs) are already available. Other members of the community are currently trying to implement a Space Marine fishing game, which Grigorenko jokingly suggested.
Tom also has the idea that, for example, a Roguelite mode could be developed for Space Marine 2, in which you start with nothing but a combat knife, while increasingly stronger enemies appear. With a percentage chance of weapons, ammunition, or health appearing when they die, you should then be able to give them a real beating.
However, developing cinematic campaigns is a little more complicated. The modders have access to the Integration Studio, but not to the animation tools.
Despite opening up to community content, Saber Interactive does not want to give up on Space Marine 2. New content for the hit shooter is set to be released this year. You can find more information in the box above. It has also been announced that development on Space Marine 3 has begun.
