The fog in Minecraft has been extensively reworked. What may sound like a minor detail at first glance has a clear impact on the atmosphere.
Just because the world is made of blocks doesn’t mean that Minecrafthas to have poor graphics. This has already been proven by numerous mods that take lighting and particle effects to a whole new level.
But even the official developers occasionally release updates that give the most successful game of all time a new look. The latest improvement: Environment-dependent fog.
What exactly is changing?
A certain haze has been around in Minecraft for quite some time, but the Update 25w19a (no, nobody fell asleep on the keyboard here) brings with it a fog that works a little differently.
How dense and far-reaching the fog is depends on the environment. So in rain, snow, or even in a lava area you’ll notice the difference. Reddit user SigmaHold offers a direct comparison:
Minecraft now has weather-based fog

The comments reveal a thoroughly positive attitude toward the new graphics feature. For example, aforlornpenguin writes that the snow looks so cozy.
WillyDafish agrees enthusiastically: Yes, right?! I love it so much!
Auch SeanWasTaken is also enthusiastic: Great change, it looks much more atmospheric.
However, there are also critical voices who don’t see the advantage so clearly through the fog. ConscientiousPath is convinced that it only looks good in screenshots, but it will be annoying if you can’t see properly in actual gameplay.
On the other hand, bubblegum-rose believes that players will quickly get used to it: Like many of the recent changes, we’ll hate it at first, but a few weeks later we’ll wonder how we ever lived without it.
However, in addition to the ambient fog, there is still the render distance fog, which blocks visibility regardless of the environment.
Otherwise, update 25w19a is quite short. In addition to the fog, a target tolerance for projectiles has been added, which changes over time. From now on, you should find it easier to hit distant targets with your bow.
