As Steve sings, Jack Black spends just 34 seconds describing how delicious his lava chicken tastes. And that’s enough for a new chart record.
You can think what you want about the Minecraft movie, but one thing is certain: It’s doing outrageously well! As the most successful video game adaptation of all time, director Jared Hess’s work is now storming the music charts.
That’s right: as officially announced by Billboard, a song performed by lead actor Jack Black has climbed to number 78 on the Hot 100 The US portal has been keeping track of the most played and best-selling songs since 1958, a total of 67 years.
La-La-La-Lava … Chi-Chi-Chi-Chicken
Specifically, it’s about Steve’s Lava Chicken Song
– the 34-second jingle in which Black makes us hungry for his delicious chicken fried in erupting magma. (And if we’re honest, we believe every word.)
Theoretically, there is also a longer version of the song, which is one minute and 15 seconds long, but that’s not what we’re talking about here. Just listen for yourself:
But that’s not all: the song, written by Jack Black and Jared Hess, has also made it to number 10 on the Hot Rock Songs charts.
If you know Jack Black, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. As the lead singer of the metal band Tenacious D, the 55-year-old actor has long been known for his distinctive voice. He previously achieved a similar feat with his song Peaches as Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. movie.
Steve’s Lava Chicken is now the shortest song ever to make it into Billboard’s Hot 100 – previously, Kid Cudi achieved this with his 37-second Beautiful Trip.
Another prominent example is PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen) by Japanese comedian Pikotar, which clocks in at 45 seconds. Comparable songs break the 1-minute mark.
The Minecraft craze is now also being embraced by film studio Warner Bros. After some movie screenings got completely out of hand due to a TikTok trend (for example, with fireworks and live chickens), there are now special screenings where the audience is encouraged to sing along.
Whether you want to subject yourself to this is up to you. You can read what we think of the Minecraft movie under the links above.
