Two secret projects have been canceled, but Sony seems to be forging new plans from them. Why these decisions were made and what it means for the future remains to be seen.

Unexpected cancellations and looking back

Sony has surprisingly canceled two live service games—projects that hadn’t even been officially announced yet. One of them was a title in the God of War universe, developed by Bluepoint Games, which has made a name for itself with elaborate remakes such as Demon’s Souls. The second game was from Bend Studio, known for the open-world adventure Days Gone

The decision was made after a comprehensive review of the ongoing projects. In the process, Sony found that not all games met its own quality standards. Despite the cutbacks, both studios remain firmly integrated into the PlayStation Studios. This support signals that Sony continues to have great confidence in the potential of the teams.

In the past, Bluepoint and Bend have shown that they are capable of more than just being production studios. Bend Studio in particular, whose Days Gone has built a loyal fan base despite initial criticism, has proven that it is willing to take risks.

Chapter 2: Where are live-service games headed?

Sony’s decision could mean a course correction for the entire live-service strategy. The year 2024 was characterized by extremes: Helldivers 2 became an instant success with an impressive twelve million sales in just a few weeks. At the same time, however, Concord failed so spectacularly that it was withdrawn from the market after only two weeks.

These mixed experiences seem to be leading Sony to a new approach: quality over quantity. Particular attention is being paid to Bluepoint Games, which wants to focus more on in-house developments in the future. It remains to be seen whether a new hit will emerge from these creative experiments.

For fans, the excitement remains as to which projects will emerge from this strategic realignment The latest decisions show that Sony is willing to take bold steps to build a strong portfolio in the long term. With Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games on board, the gaming community can look forward to some surprises – maybe even groundbreaking new games.
