The Game Awards are considered one of the most important events in the gaming industry. But as with any awards ceremony, there is not only reason to celebrate, but also to mourn. This year, “Astro Bot” from Team Asobi crowned the evening with the prestigious “Game of the Year” title. Other contenders such as “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree” or “Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth” went away empty-handed. The main focus was on Black Myth: Wukong, an ambitious action RPG based on Chinese myths. Despite its impressive performance and millions in sales, it did not make it to the top prize, which was met with great disappointment by studio head Yocar-Feng Ji.

The game was nominated in several categories and received the “Best Action Game” and “Players’ Voice Award”. Nevertheless, these successes were not enough for the studio head. His expectations of winning the top prize were so high that he prepared a speech of thanks two years in advance. The missed title left Ji with the feeling of a “wasted” trip to Los Angeles.
Between appreciation and frustration: the reactions to the result

The emotional reactions of Yocar-Feng Ji on the Weibo platform & caused discussions. He described the trip to the Game Awards as disappointing because the title “Game of the Year” went to “Astro Bot”. While many fans could relate to his frustration, others criticized the publicly expressed displeasure and emphasized that prizes are never guaranteed – even for excellent games.

Despite this controversy, Black Myth: Wukong remains an impressive work that has set new standards in terms of graphics and gameplay. However, the discussion about Ji’s reaction raises a fundamental question: Should studios measure their success more by creative achievements than by awards? Ultimately, “Black Myth: Wukong” shows that a game can shape the gaming landscape – regardless of whether it is crowned “Game of the Year” or not.
