For one category of PS5 gamers, upgrading to the Pro console could be worthwhile.

The Playstation 5 Pro will be released in about a month. Since then, there has been much discussion about both the price and the technical upgrade that the new console is supposed to achieve. Tech experts at Digital Foundry have already analyzed eleven games in recent weeks that run under the “Pro Enhanced” seal.

In a separate conclusion, Digital Foundry now also addresses the question of whether the upgrade to the PS5 Pro is worthwhile. A comparison with PC graphics cards is also drawn.

“A good investment for performance fans”

In principle, thanks to the improved hardware and the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSS) feature, many advantages in ray tracing, native resolution and stable frame rates have emerged in all the games tested.

For this target group, which values the highest possible performance, the PS5 Pro is a correspondingly good investment.

On the other hand, however, there are PlayStation gamers who have previously enjoyed their games in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second on screen. Here, even the “visual quality in the base model” is sufficient, so this target group should probably keep their hands off the Pro console.

Compared to a classic gaming PC, the value of the PlayStation 5 Pro is of course debatable. Incidentally, shortly after the unveiling of the Sony console, we also tried to build a PC that would be as equivalent as possible to the PS5 Pro.

According to Digital Foundry, the PS5 Pro is “a strong option, especially considering the cost compared to a PC”. To do this, the tech experts draw on a comparison for PC gamers when they buy a new graphics card.

According to this, the increase between the basic console and the PS5 Pro is roughly comparable to the jump from the RTX 3060 to the RTX 4070. Of course, games benefit from the increased performance to different degrees – which is partly due to the implementation by the developers – but features like PSSR also provide more possibilities than can be seen from the pure specs.

What do you think of the PS5 Pro? Have your feelings calmed down as a result of the price shock and are you looking forward to the console or are you not considering it in the long run either?
