Following the departure of Henry Cavill, the end of the Netflix series has now been announced: Season 5 will be the last of The Witcher

It’s official: The Witcher is getting a fifth season, but it will be the end of the Netflix series. The streaming service has confirmed this in a press release.

This means that Liam Hemsworth’s career as the Witcher will be relatively short-lived: After Henry Cavill said goodbye to the role of Geralt of Riva after three seasons Hemsworth was signed up as the titular Witcher.

The Witcher comes to an end after season 5

It’s no surprise that a fifth season is to come. Netflix had already confirmed the renewal with the casting of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt. What’s new now is that Season 5 will also be the finale of The Witcher.

The decision makes perfect sense in view of the original: Seasons 4 and 5 are dedicated to the three remaining Witcher novels by author Andrzej Sapkowski: Baptism of Fire, The Swallow Tower and The Lady of the Lake. After that, CD Projekt Red’s video games theoretically continue the story of Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer and Triss.

When season 4 of The Witcher will start on Netflix is currently unknown. Netflix has at least already announced the start of filming for the fourth season on April 18, 2024. This means that the new episodes can be expected to be released from mid-2025.

What else is going on in The Witcher

It remains to be seen how well Liam Hemsworth will be received as the new Witcher. Many fans have not taken the departure of Henry Cavill and the recasting of Geralt too well. Their displeasure was expressed, for example, in a petition with over 340,000 signatures.

In general, Netflix’s Witcher franchise is on rather shaky ground While Season 3, for example, has an average rating of 79 percent on Rotten Tomatoes the meagre audience score of 19 percent speaks a different language. The prequel Blood Origin looks even worse with 28 and 13 points respectively.
