Nvidia is working on a new feature that will automatically convert games from SDR color space to HDR. With a mod you can already get the function now

Current Nvidia graphics cards have a number of additional functions in store. These include upscaling with DLSS, reflex or patch tracing, which have been successively introduced in recent years.

Now the manufacturer is probably working on a new feature based on RTX video technology that will convert any PC game into HDR-capable content.

The most important things in brief

  • Nvidia is planning a new feature to convert PC games from SDR to HDR color space
  • The feature was found in version 551.23 of the Nvidia driver – but is not yet officially available
  • A mod already enables the feature

This feature is planned: Since version 551.23 of the Nvidia driver called Geforce Game Ready, the “RTX Video Enhancement” function can be found in the control panel, which, according to the manufacturer, allows you to automatically bring videos with SDR color space into the HDR range

But it’s not just a focus on videos, because as the modder “emoose” explains on the platform NexusMods there are also some hidden “TrueHDR” profiles in the Nvidia driver as part of the update.

This should make it clear that the GPU manufacturer also wants to publish the SDR-to-HDR function for all games – regardless of whether the color space has also been implemented natively by the manufacturer.

How you can already use the feature: It is still unknown when Nvidia plans to release the feature – but in the NexusMods article linked above you will also find the appropriate mod that already enables the conversion of “almost all games” to HDR format.

The mod called “NvTrueHDR” should work with all games from DirectX9 and newer; OpenGL and Vulkan are also listed as “probably compatible”.

In order to use the mod, the following steps are required in addition to Windows 11 with Windows Display Driver Model 3.1 (WDDM) and an HDR-capable monitor:

  • Installs the Nvidia driver 551.23 or newer
  • Activate RTX Video HDR in the Nvidia system controls
  • Deactivates the Windows-native AutoHDR option

At least initial reviews of the mod suggest that it works better than the previous Windows solution. In the 3DGuru forum there are also parameters for various games to get the most out of NvTrueHDR – it remains to be seen what the “real” implementation from Nvidia looks like.

Now we need your opinion: Have you already tested NvTrueHDR? What results have you seen in your games? Is HDR a feature that more games should integrate natively or are solutions like Nvidia’s enough for you? Let us know in the comments below
