Fallout 76 gets new regions in 2022 – but players don’t think that goes far enough

The Pitt will be Fallout 76’s first expedition, sending players beyond the borders of Appalachia. But many fans want something different.

The disappointment of many fans after the release of Fallout 76 in November 2018 was great. Much bigger than the disappointment was the list of bugs, problems and wishes players had for the new Fallout. Bethesda responded and delivered new content that was well received by players. But players actually want something much bigger: more life in the world of Appalachia itself.

Steel Reign and the new features

On 7 July 2021, the major update “Steely Dominion” was released, which not only continues the story of the Steely Brotherhood, but also introduces many new features. Players have been waiting a long time for some of the features, such as the ability to craft legendary weapons and armour. In addition, legendary power armour is now available and some legendary effects have been reworked and new ones added.

The biggest criticism relates to the length of the new story: although it is good, it is too short and does not offer enough. On Reddit, many players are of the opinion that releasing both expansions in one big update would have done the game better than releasing them in two parts. Reddit user GeneralSoviet writes about the two expansions, for example:

“[…] it would have been better if Steel Dawn and Steel Reign weren’t separate parts. Story was pretty good, it held my attention and I enjoyed a proper Vault mission. […] No backstory to the power armour was a huge disappointment. I really don’t know why that’s even the case.”

Fallout 76 takes place before anything else in the Fallout series, and the Steel Brotherhood is still very young in the story itself. The desire to learn more about the motivations of the Brotherhood and their iconic armour is obvious.

What players can expect in Fallout 76 in the future

With the Winter 2021 update, new end-game challenges are to follow, which we have already reported on as part of the Fallout 76 roadmap. On Reddit, however, many players would like to see even more and especially bigger changes and updates. In a much-noticed thread Aurora_Vorealis writes:

“If Bethesda manages to bring some new disconnected quests and events to otherwise dead places, it would not only make fans happy or even bring them back, but breathe new life into the world of Appalachia.”

Many users agree with the statement and would like to see new content in Appalachia itself. ScottishShitposter97 highlights Aurora_Vorealis’ post and adds:

“What annoys me so much is that we KNOW they [Bethesda] are capable of great story content. Far Harbour was (in my opinion) a masterpiece, excellent setting, great story, real choices, an all round fun time. If only they devoted the right resources to this game, they’d have both community satisfaction and profit.”

Vernon_Trier commented in the same thread:

“The thing is, while there’s nothing new to grind and nothing really challenging to equip […] any new events or quests only provide fun for a few playthroughs. After that they become pointless time wasters. The same old (and pretty damn thankless) gameplay loop is what they should change.”

The community hopes such changes will come with the updates this autumn and winter. With Wild Appalachia, Bethesda has already proven that the typical Fallout atmosphere is possible without NPCs: In a quest series, players learned how to brew alcohol and liquor, the building system was improved and seasonal events were introduced. Even without a map expansion, players in Fallout 76 could once again experience what Fallout is all about: exploring an open world, linked with a great story and the typical role-playing experience.

It is currently unknown how large the new world will be, which will appear with “The Pitt” as expeditions in 2022. What is known is that players will leave Appalachia for the first time. A first teaser of the new content suggests that the new region will be reached via Vertibird. And from the looks of it, we can also expect aliens in the new region:

The first expedition is called “The Pitt” and is sure to bring back memories of Fallout 3 for some players. The Pitt was the second add-on for Fallout 3 and took players to an industrial raider town located in the remains of Pittsburgh. In reality, the distance between West Virgina and Pittsburg is about 300 kilometres – there will certainly not be such a large map expansion for Fallout 76. Since Vertibirds can be seen in the first teaser trailer for the free expansion, there will most likely be a fast travel function that players can use to get to the new area.
