With The Old World, Warhammer returns to its roots and soon releases a new game system that makes old figures valuable again

Warhammer is a crazy world. In (Total War: Warhammer 3) for example, there are three different factions for undead spawn: the Vampire Lords, the Vampire Coast and the Tomb Kings. So it should come as no surprise to anyone if something in this world just won’t stay underground!

However, not even Warhammer has ever seen a rules system come back from the dead like this before. At least until now, because Games Workshop will soon be releasing The Old World, a new Warhammer rules system that makes use of many of the basics of the very first Warhammer version.

The Old World coming soon

It has been known since 2019 that Games Workshop is working on a new edition of Warhammer Fantasy, which has actually been discontinued since 2015. However, this new version has not yet been published and has no release date

The latter has now been announced and at the same time (the gates to pre-orders) opened. So if you are planning to return to the Old World soon, you can do so in just a few weeks:

  • The Old World will be released on January 20, 2024

The cost of The Old World

As is typical for tabletops and Warhammer in particular, you’ll have to shell out some money for the new rules system. At least if you want to own a complete army to play with as well as the rules

  • Bretonia Basic Box: Contains a complete army with new figures, the complete basic rulebook and game material in the form of dice or measuring sticks. Costs 206 euros.
  • Grundbox Gruftkönige: Contains a complete army with new figures, the complete rulebook and game material in the form of dice or measuring sticks. Costs 230 euros.
  • Basic rulebook: The rulebook for The Old World summarizes everything on 352 pages. Costs 55 euros.
  • Radiant Armies: Contains the army lists and rules for all playable factions of the Good. Costs 40 Euro.
  • Warring Hordes: Contains the army lists and rules for all playable Evil factions. Costs 40 Euro.
  • Unit Minis: You will have to pay between 30 and 66 euros for the numerous new game figures.

What exactly is this?

Warhammer has a long history and is probably one of the biggest and most popular tabletop games in the world. Here you build huge armies from figures and compete against your friends. What you can do and how you can move is determined by a complex rules system.

Originally, Warhammer existed as a fantasy version, which was released in 1983. However, Games Workshop discontinued support for it in 2015, let the whole world fall apart and released Age of Sigmar as a significantly streamlined successor product, which was not well received by some long-time fans. With The Old World, the classic rules for Warhammer Fantasy are being reissued in a revised version.

Unlike Age of Sigmar, the system is compatible with the minis from the original Warhammer Fantasy editions – although army books do not yet exist for all the factions of the time.

Are you looking forward to The Old World or have you had little to do with Warhammer outside of the PC or consoles? Have you been waiting nine years for Warhammer Fantasy to continue, or are you completely satisfied with Age of Sigmar? What new figures and army books would you like to see? Let us know in the comments!
